There was a well known Davie Glen from that neck of the woods, hostel warden Glen Doll? stonemason, and man of the hills. Big beard, buddy of Nancy Smith who kept the wee hostel at Fersit, near Tulloch on the Fort William line....Skoosh.
-
This is really for Ev!
Was alexander glen b 1827 m Agnes Reid?
I saw you were looking into William Reid in another post, but I think it was completed by the time I replied.
My line is Mary Reid, sister of Agnes.
-
hi :)
not sure if that is the same reid's :-\
alexander glen married isabella reid 1856 dunnichen angus
think isabella's parents were william reid and elizabeth(betty) smith
did mary reid have a daughter jean(b. 1855) to daniel forbes ?
ev
-
It is the same Reids. My fault for replying before checking the names from notes.
Yes, Mary was the mother of Jean Forbes. I've never found much about Jean, apart from all the info from 1855. Its a few years now since I looked into the Reid side.
-
its a few years since i've looked as well
have jean forbes on the 1861 census but while i note children of brothers and
sisters of my line i don't track them

Currently researching for a project on Davie Glen (1909 - 1978) from Tealing.
Davie was the youngest of six children. His Father was Alexander Glen and his mother Margaret nee Turner.
The family appears to have been from the Marykirk area. They then moved to Westhall Terrace Duntrune just north of Dundee, I havent been able to establish exactly when, or why they moved.
Alexander Glen was killed in action at the battle of Arras in France 3rd May 1917, he is buried in the Faubourg-d'Amiens Cemetery where the Arras Memorial is situated

Hi Canmore VP,
Sorry I do not know this line of the family

In my limited research I have come across several David Glen's also, one seems to have been a quite well known footballer who played for Brechin City. With Brechins' proximity to Marykirk quite possibly related to the Glens' I'm researching.

Hi
My line is from David Glen & Ann Donaldson. Their son George Glen married a May/Marjory Mill, they are my g g grandparents.
I haven't done a lot of work on this line but have some information.
I contacted Kew and obtained photocopies of James and David's discharge. It confirms that of the brothers only James was at Waterloo.
I obtained the discharge letters of a George Glenn who also came from Dunnichen and was in the Royal Artillery. Is he related to James and David?

Hi Ann,
Lovely to hear from a distant cousin.
I know that both brothers David & James Glenn served in the RHA, James until 1818, and David about 1816, was David at Waterloo, I know he was a pensioner
What are the details of this George, when was he discharged and what age was he.
David married Ann Donaldson on 11/12/1819 in Dunnichen, from the 1841 & 1851 Census, they spent time in Aberdeen, their children were baptised in Dunnichen.
I have three children for George and Marjory is that right.
Best regards Joan

Canmore, this must be Davie Glen the mountain man? he built the west gable at Ryvoan Bothy after the fire, assisted by Nanvy Smith who had a bunkhouse at Fersit. Nice stonework, he apparently had to tie his beard up as it was getting jammed by the stones as he worked.

Hi Skoosh,
Very Funny
-
As far as I know David and James did not have a brother George , although if he was from Dunnichen
they probably are related
George Glenn , discharged aged 28 , service 1809 - 1818 Royal Artillery
My line is also David Glen and Ann Donaldson through their son Alexander Glen(1827-1867)

Down as male on the IGI
I suspect he may have been a stillborn child :-\ , although I've never looked at the OPR on Scotlandspeople
ev
Added - I don't have any more information on Charles or Elizabeth
-
"Oct.(1786) James Glen in Moss'side of Dunnichen and his spouse Jane(or Ann or Agnes) Salmond had a child Baptised ?"
OPR someone has posted.

Completed

Down as male on the IGI. I suspect he may have been a stillborn child
I think that's unlikely. The OPRs mainly record baptisms, and a stillborn child, or a child that died before baptism, would not have been baptised at all. More likely that the clerk just forgot the name of the child, and wrote the rest of the record, intending to find and insert the child's name later.
-
Hi Forfarian :)
I think you are correct , the male child was baptised.
The fact that the entry has no exact date given(just Oct. 1786) would also indicate it was an afterthought.
ev
-
Born 10 months after the marriage a name would have been a clue to the grand parents, also the baptism says child , not male, could be female, its amazing how much or how little information can be given from one parish to another, places where they were living etc.
-
I was asked some time ago about George Glenn and what information I had on him.
I have just looked up the discharge papers for George Glenn and it states that he was born in Dunnichen and enlisted in the Royal Artillery on the 21st April 1809 at the age of eighteen for limited service.
He served for 9 years and 275 days and was a private all of his service. He was discharged on the 31st December 1818 due to suffering from varicose veins. He signed the discharge paper so he was literate.
He is described at about 28 years old, five feet nine inches in height with light har, grey eyes with a fair complexion, his trade was given as labourer. There is an added note that George was a gunner in Capt Tylers company 7th Batt Royal Artillery.
There is a faded entry about George obtaining funds to return to Forfar with his family.
-
Hi Mado1,
I also looked into George, found a marriage to Margaret Findlay 24/6/1837 in Inverkeilor, they had two daughters, live in Brechin Burgh 1841 Census at Cooksen, can not say if it is a match.
-
I'm off to Scotlands People centre for a day search soon. I will try and see if George died after 1855. Might be long shot but you never know. I will let you know what I learn.
regards
Ann

I appreciate that these posts were made a long time ago but if any of you are still around, James Glen 1791 and Elizabeth Cameron 1801 are my 3 x great grandparents.
-
Hello birab, Welcome :D
Ugo was last showing online last week so I am sure they will pick up on your reply real soon.
Regards
Sarah
-
Thank you Sarah. For added interest in this thread, Elizabeth Cameron, James Glen's wife, although I'm certain she was unaware of the fact, was a direct descendant of Robert the Bruce.
-
Welcome bigrab, always interested to hear about James, do tell what the connection is, and what's the story about Robert the Bruce
-
Elizabeth's paternal grandmother was Anne Crocket (married to her grandfather, John Cameron). Anne Crocket's mother and father were Thomas Crocket and Agnes Aitken who were both descendants of Bruce. Thomas was also descended from the Lyons of Glamis, The Stewart Kings and through Joan Beaufort, Queen of Scots (James 1st's wife) he was descended from John of Gaunt and the Plantagenet Kings of England. On another line he was also descended from Owen Tudor.
-
Thank Bigrab, will have get the research out, very curious
-
The 1791 James Glen is my 5th great grand uncle through my great grandmother Jane/Jean Gibson, 1900. Her daughter (my grandmother), Jean is 99 years old this year.
-
Sorry grantF I missed your post,, happy birthday to Jean
