Post by: Myansome on Sunday 04 April 10 13:03 BST (UK)
I am trying to trace family info on Matthias Stanley Wallis b 1886, d1940, miner in Broken Hill, New South Wales. He emigrated from Penzance, Cornwall, I believe.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Myansome,

What information would you like?

There is a Matthias S Wallis, proposed address in England (don't know where I got born from) Longrock? Penzance Cornwall, he is aged 35, on an incoming passenger list in 1922, ship Homeric, also a Mabel aged 33 a Housewife.  I think it says he is a Butcher but I am not sure.  Previous residence USA.

Tressle

ADDING - it does say intended place of future residence is England

I have found the same couple going back to USA in 1929 so probably not your man if he died in NSW, his is a Butler not a Butcher.

Last address was Penzance Cornwall. Going to New York on the BERENGARIA.

This is another, my Dad's Uncle Stan who  previously emigrated to New York. So this is very helpful addition in his case. He could have been visiting the Matthias, his uncle that I'm searching for.

Can you tell me where you got 1940 as his death from?

Also do you have his parents names, was he married & any idea when he might have emigrated?

Sorry for all the questions but anything you have is a help  :)

There is a WW1 USA draft registration for a Stanley Mathias Wallace (sic), born February 22nd 1886 in England. This is probably the same man as he is a Butler.  Mother is Mrs Jane Wallace.

So can we rule this chap in the USA out.

Tressle

Sorry only just seen your post above - sorry to be so thick but just to clarify there were two Matthias Stanley Wallis's born in 1886 in Cornwall - one was the uncle of the other.

It's a joy really!
The one that has been found is the namesake of the one we are searching for  . The one we are searching for would have been possibly born in the 1850's. He had William, George, John Pearce (my great grandfather), Albert and Aldridge as brothers and Mar, Fances, Jessie and Evelyna as sisters. The liklihood is that they would have been born in St Buryan, West Cornwall as their father owned the King's Arms there.
Cheers,
John

Hi

I think you have confused the issue because your initial thread said he was born in 1886.  (I am trying to trace family info on Matthias Stanley Wallis b 1886, d1940, miner in Broken Hill, New South Wales. He emigrated from Penzance, Cornwall, I believe.)

So the one we are looking for was born in the 1850's?

Yes, sorry........................ too many Matthias's and even more John's!
We can rule out the USA Matthias. But the additional info was great!
We are looking for his Uncle presumably born in the 1850's who emigrated to we think Broken Hill, New South Wales.
Sorry, Guys

I have found a Mathias Wallis born St Buryan Cornwall, 1854, on the 1871 census.  So looking at his siblings etc I think he is the man we are after.   Can't see him immediately after 1871 so he could have gone after that.

So, you have no idea if he did emigrate or die in 1940 at Broken Hill, NSW?

I am just checking, because I had already searched for him & couldn't find a death or burial near that date.

Your original post:
Yes, we know from family that he did emigrate to Broken Hill. We also are fairly certain that he remained in Australia, possibly married a person called Grace. and certainly had one daughter, again called Grace. He had another brother who emigrated to South Africa.

No death for a Matthias Wallis on the NSW BDM up to 1979.

A couple of Matthew's, but I don't think they are him...

WALLIS  MATTHEW  age 64yrs d. 1933 NORTH SYDNEY - Parents: UNKNOWN #18988

Cannot find a marriage of a Matthias Wallis or a birth with a father listed as Matthias Wallis.

I have looked though all my cd's but you can check online here:

Also nothing at Broken Hill Cemetery for him.

Matthias does appear with the family in St Buryan until 1871 as WALLISH/WALLIS. Then Alice is alone with the younger children in 1881 Widowed - WALLIS. Matthias buried 16 Mar 1878 aged 54. There were two sons named Matthias one born soon after marriage who died young buried 26 Dec 1851 aged 3 and a second one born in 1853 or 4. (baptised 24 Dec 1854.) Looks like birth Jun 1/4 1853 5c 374

St Buryan Records

Adding to what Merlin has tried just letting you know I also can find no record of this person being in Broken Hill either. There is no marriage or death or burial listed for him. . I checked SA also in case this alleged death in 1940 happened over the border and nothing there either. He does not appear in any NSW Electoral Rolls

Cheers Kris  :)

Hi
This reference to MATTHIAS WALLIS in the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper of Feb 1939 may refer to your man.

It is a LEGAL NOTICE and says he was known as JOHN WALLIS and has died in SYDNEY

It refers to anyone having claims to his assets etc.

MMM Good find this looks interesting Sue. Its not Broken Hill but it is Matthias about the right time.

John WALLIS is at 56 Albian St in the 1933 Electoral Roll - Retired. No other Wallis' present.

No luck so far with other entries although  in 1930 I do find a John WALKER at the address - a Miner. No other Walkers listed at the premises.

He is there in 1933, 1936 and 37 also

aha 1937 we have John WALLACE No Occ also at the address

Cheers Kris  :)

Thanks Guys. Incredible stuff! The family farm in St Buryan had been sold by their father as mortgages were on it. Their father Matthias was the Innkeeper at the Kings Arms, St Buryan. Their grandfather John was a farmer and had inherited Trevorgans Farm late in life.  His brother George also emigrates to Australia and I'm told goes to Broken Hill to the Gold mines. Albert emigrates to South Africa, John Pearce (my great grandfather) joins the Royal Navy and Coaostguard; William, Frances, Elizabeth, JessieEvelina, Ellen and Aldrdge, unknown as yet. So George is also somewhere out there with you. George was born in 24 Oct 1858 in St Buryan.

George H WALLIS was still with his mother, Alice,  in Cornwall in 1881, but not with her in 1891 - looks like the death found by Annie is for the right person.

Hi Myansome,
The name of one of the brothers you have given is incorrect. EDIT A closer reading shows you did not print an incorrect name, the William & Francis are seperate people.
His proper name was WILLIAM RUFUS WALLIS   not William Francis Wallis.
He too came to Australia and it is HE who married the woman named GRACE (so often a basis of fact in a family tale)
GRACE GRENFELL

They had a family in Queensland between 1882 and 1895.
there was indeed a daughter named GRACE

One of the sons named LOUIS MATHIAS WALLIS enlisted for ww1 and you can read his record digitised.

http://naa12.naa.gov.au/scripts/ResearcherScreen.asp

It tells a lot about the family including addresses and that his mother was widowed in 1918.

Here is WILLIAM's death in NSW

1918 WALLIS WILLIAM R father   MATTHIAS mother ALICE  at PETERSHAM reg.9888

And GRACE's(probably)

In 1946 WALLIS, GRACE father   RICHARD PEIRE motherMARY JANE at WAVERLEY reg.   13974 .

Hi Again,
Looking for a marriage for GRACE and WILLIAM without success, it seems they married before their arrival into Queensland.

Here are the Immigration details.

WALLIS, GRACE. Age 21  29/1/1882 Per SCOTTISH WIZARD.  IMM/116 626 Z1959 M1698

WALLIS WILLIAM Age 21. Details as above.

WALLIS, CASSY DIANA, infant. Details as above.

Sue
ADDING. Wonder if baby CASSY was born on the ship as we have her birth registered in QLD.

Hi John.
Glad it was a help.
http://newspapers.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/search?adv=y

Here I have noted the Funeral Notices, 3 of them, placed in the Sydney Morning Herald on 3/8/1918 relating to WILLIAM RUFUS WALLIS

1. Mrs GRACE WALLIS of 48 Westbourne St. Petersham invites......friends... her dear husband

2.Friends of...Mrs T ALLEN ( this is dau. CASSY DIANA), Mrs H. KNIGHT ( this is  dau.ELLEN) Mrs J. CUDDIHY ( this is dau. LAURA) Mr LOU. WALLIS (this is son LOUIS) and Mr BERT WALLIS (ALBERT perhaps) invite them ..... our dear father.

{The marriages for these people can be found on the Qld and NSW indexes, the links for which you have.}

3. Friends of Mr JOHN WALLIS and MR and MRS C EDWARDS   invite them  ......their dear BROTHER.

So it seems there was another WALLIS sibling in Australia (female)

As has been posted,GEORGE HENRY WALLIS  died in 1918 too.

There was a  Legal Notice in the Sydney Morning Herald of 8th August 1918.  It tells us he was a ganger of Petersham.

Interestingly the Sands Directory of 1895 shows GEORGE WALLIS at 20 Windsor Rd. Petersham
and
JOHN WALLIS at 18 Windsor Rd Petersham.

Perhaps it is them ;D

Sue
