John Reid b. 1798 Birr, Offaly (Kings), Ireland, was a Sergeant in the 48th Regiment of Foot. He served in Ireland, England, Isle of Man, Australia, and India. He settled in Bury, Lancashire, after his medical discharge and started a shop. He died there in 1872. I wonder if he is not related in some fashion to William Reid (Read).

Hi oboran and welcome to rootschat
I have put a link to the post you are referring to but as Reid and variants are so common in this country it might be better to do a bit more research on your John.
Do you have the 1871 census? If so can you quote the reference? I have found one John of the right age in Bury but he is shown as born in Kent and is not running a shop. His occupation simply says "Pension" which may be an army one I suppose.

1861 RG9 2837 109 23
John Reid 63 Chelsea Pensioner b Ireland
Mary Ann wife 56 b Australia
Henrietta Maria? dau 15 bonnet maker b Isle of Man
This sounds as if it is your man which probably means the 1871 was too.

Thanks for the information. The John Reid of the 1871 census is definitely the right one. Your help is most appreciated.
