I'm researching the Keirven family from Northumberland in England. This surname is very unique as it seems to be the form taken/written down when Patrick KEIRVEN came from Ireland to Northumberland. Given they could not read or write and would have had a strong accent, the name is different to how it would have been spelled in Ireland.
So, I've been able to track ancestors and relatives merely based on the surname.
However I've come across a Dennis KEIRVEN from the US Civil War (1861-1865). I've found two references so far:
1. KEIRVEN, DENNIS - Detailed Co. A, 75th Ohio; Dept. of South. This is in the "Roster of the US Signal Corps, 1861-1865)" http://www.civilwarsignals.org/brown/brownrostergm.html.
2. Keirven, Dennis - U.S. Veteran Signal Corps Association.
Roster of Signal corps, U.S.A. 1861-1865, issued by the U.S. veteran signal corps association, Civil war division, November 1910. (page 3 of 5)
Does anyone have details of this Dennis, his history or ancestors?

Thanks for all the info folks. I went looking at the www.ilsos.gov links and they now take you to the cyberdriveillinois website. Kindof confusing!
It doesn't look like there's a way to order cert copies online (I'm in Australia). It looks like the only options are snail mail, fronting up to the offices in person, or getting someone to go do it for you. Is this correct?

Mary's death certificate can be ordered from the Cook County Clerk's genealogy website:
http://www.cookcountygenealogy.com/
You can order it online and the cost is $15 plus a charge for using a credit card. I believe you can download the images as soon as you pay for them.
I don't know if this is the same family but there are also marriage registrations for the following:
Alice Kirven to Henry D. Blackburn on 28 Apr 1948
William Kirven to Ellen Farrell on 11 May 1943
There's also a death registration for Benjamin H. Kirven dated 29 Dec 1921 and a John Kirven dated 7 Nov 1923.
There's also a birth for a Lawrence Kirven on 23 Oct 1885.

These people are hard to find .....
the closest match I see in the 1860 census
Gasper, Preble County, Ohio
Kerwin, Lawrence, head, 45, farmer, $500 personal property, b. Ireland
Mary, 41, b. Ireland
Dennis, 18, b. Ireland
Patrick, 16, b. Ireland
Allice, 12, b. Ireland
James, 4, b. Ohio
John, 3, b. Ohio
Lawrence, 3 months, b. Ohio
So Allice (Alice) was born ~1848 in Ireland, and James was born ~1856 in USA. So the family must have immigrated sometime between these two dates; 1848 & 1856. However I can't find records against this family group under Kerwin, Kervin or similar. In 1850 the family group would have been Lawrence ~35, Mary (nee Dunne) ~33, Dennis James ~8, Patrick ~6 and Alice ~2.
I've found a few Lawrence's, but the dates don't line up. I've also found heaps of Patrick's (not really a unique Irish name!) but again the dates don't line up.

Thanks for the pointer.
There's a ton of info in this thread. At the outset I was hoping that the Keirven spelling could tie into the Keirven's I've got in Northumberland. I'm happy with the level of info forward of Dennis Keirven. I need to focus on Lawrence Kerwin and Mary Dunne back into Ireland, find their place of residence and their family back there. Hopefully I'll be able to link my Kerivens to this branch.
