Hi all,
This is my first post here- rootsweb looks like a very useful resource.
I wonder if there are any Llanharry locals on here who might have an idea where 'Ty Isha' is/was? It was the residence of my third great grandparents. (Google translate tells me it means 'lower house'.)
It was spelled 'Ty Isha' at the 1861/71/81 censuses. Alternative spellings at earlier censuses:
1841 - Ty Isaf
1851 - Ty Ishaf

Hi Scott, What was the name of your ancestor?
On the 1881 cenus you can see who is his neighbour might give you a clue to where the place your are looking for is.
Happy searching

Scott_D,
I can direct you to Ty Isaf, Llanharry on an online 1885 Ordnance Survey map. It's a bit of a potch to explain- are you still interested?

I sure am.

Scott_D,
google www.british-history.ac.uk/map.aspx - displays British History On Line
click on Ordnance Survey 1:10,560
click on Glamorganshire (51)
click on the square that includes the bulk of the word Bridgend
look closely at the top right hand corner of the map that appears and make out the word Llanharry (rather faint unfortunately)
position the cursor about 1/4 inch/5 mil below the first A in Llanharry and click
you should see TY ISAF on the screen (to the left of "Acres 1628.998).
Looks like a farm.

That's brilliant- thanks so much for the very clear instructions (and sorry it took me so long to get back to you).
Intriguingly, it looks as though the farm house and buildings there in 1885 are now gone, judging by a comparison with recent aerial photos of the area.
