Charter of Isabella countess of Mar of Bonegedwort AD 1404
To all about to see this charter Isabella of Douglas Countess of Mar and of Garviach eternal health in the Lord. You know that we in our pure and free widowhood of our own free will gave to our faithful Thomas son of John and our beloved sister Margaret of Douglas his wife all our demesne land of Bunegedwort with appurtenances with 20 marked lands (or is marcate a specific measurement) of earth (husbandie still not found. Cognate with husbandry?) lying next to our demesne land of Bunegedwort. Beginning from the east part of the aforesaid husbandry land and thus extending to the west part until the aforesaid 20 marcates of land with appurtenances shall be satisfied in full. Belonging by inheritance to us in the forest of Jedwort within the viscountcy of Roxburgh for homage and service of tenure of the said Thomas which has been been laid out and for the whole time of his life to be laid out to us. To be held and possessed by the aforesaid Thomas and Margaret his wife our sister and whichever lives longer and after the death of the said Thomas and Margaret our nephew John of Douglas son of the aforesaid Thomas and Margaret and the heirs of the said John of Douglas lawfully begotten of his body. There may be lacking true and lawful heirs of Margaret of Douglas of her body lawfully begotten and to be begotten. From us and our heirs in fief and by inheritance forever through all right boundaries and boundary marks without retention whithersoever. Thence rendering to us and our heirs one silver denarius by name alba firma at Cyntal on the feast of the nativity of St John the Baptist annually if required for estate in ward, marriage portion, relief payment and for all other service burden exaction custom if demanded which from the said lands with appurtenances can be demanded or required through us or our heirs in the future. Excepting the external service of the lord our King as much as it rightly pertains to the aforesaid lands of Bonegedwort and the said twenty marcates of husbandry land with appurtenances. Et ideo tibi praecipimus quod si praedictus Galfridus fecerit te securum de clameo suo prosequendo, tunc facias xij liberos et legales homines de visneto illo videre pasturam illam et tenementum, et nomina eorum imbreviari. Wilfrid of Lucy has complained to us that William Douglas has unjustly and without (cause) disseisined him from the common land of his pasture in Fawdon which belongs to his free tenement in Aungerham after the first sea crossing of the lord King our father to Vasconia. Therefore we order you that if the said Wilfred has given you surety for pursuing his claim, then you arrange 12 free and lawful men from that neighbourhood to look at that pasture and tenement and have their names registered.And summon them through good summoners that they are before us [at Newcastle on Tyne on the Monday which will be the day after the octave of the Nativity of St John the Baptist] prepared to make inquest by jury. And produce William through security and safe pledges or his bailiff if he himself hasn't been found because then the judgment of the court will be heard. And have there the summoners, the names of the pledges and this briefly

Concerning the lands (terris) of William of Douglas to be seized into the hands of the king.
When Alianora who (quae) was the wife of the late William of Ferrers, who held from the king in chief, after the death of the said William her husband, yielding her widow's dower at the court of the king in the usual way, which (dower) fell to her from the free tenement which was the aforesaid William's in the reign of the king, (asked? I don't know pecierit) for it to be assigned to her; and the same Alianora, the assignation of the said dower having been made, as the custom is in the kingdom of the king, aforesaid, took the oath that she would not marry without the permission of the king and after went her way to the kingdom of Scotland to seek the normal dower which fell to her from the free tenement belonging to the aforesaid man in the same kingdom. While the aforesaid Alianora delayed awaiting her aforesaid dower in the manor of Elen la Zusche de Trauernent William of Douglas approached the said manor with horses and arms and a multitude of armed men and seized her there by force and against her will and further abducted her to the same Scottish kingdom and detained her (eam) in the same place in prejudice and contempt of the king, a manifest ??? of the crown and dignity of the king, as the king learned from the account of faithful worthies.
The king, wishing a remedy to be applied to the above mentioned events, ordered the viscount of Northumberland that he take all lands and tenements goods and cattles of the aforesaid William in his bailiwick without delay into the hands of the king and have it guarded safely until (donec) the king order otherwise so that he answer to the king at his exchequer for any losses occurring and he have it investigated carefully cautiously and circumspectly if the aforesaid William can be found anywhere in his bailiwick. If William happens to be found anywhere in the said bailiwick he is to be arrested and kept safe in the king's prison until the king order otherwise.
