Title: The name Uriah

I am trying to find out more about a Uriah Boswell.  In Lewisham 1889 George Boswell married a Phoebe Baker.  His father is given as Uriah Boswell-a tinman.  Are there other versions of the name that I should look for?

I can find a Huragh Boswell born 1837 Brighton mentioned as living in Kensington in the 1881 census but then I come to a stop. 

Any ideas or pointers would be appreciated.  Thanks

Is he the George Boswell b 1870 Brighton Sussex in Wandsworh Prison in 1891?

If not - can we have his birthyear and birthplace

I think that is the George I am looking for.  According to the marriage certificate he was 20 in 1889.

I think his wife Phoebe was living with a Dennis Dunn by the time of the 1891 census. However, I could be mistaken on that.

George was still around in 1895 as he was a witness at Julia Baker's marriage to Patrick Donovan.

I've got a reference to a Uriah Boswell who was granted a pedlar's certificate at Portsmouth, Hampshire, in 1871, but unfortunately don't have the full details. If you were able to look at the certificate register itself (which is probably located at the Records Office in Portsmouth) it may include Uriah's age and place of abode.

In terms of possible alternative spellings of Uriah, you could consider Yuri, Yui or even Riah.

Thanks.  I am heading for a day in Portsmouth during the Easter holidays and will check it out.  Out of interest, did each Council keep a list of Pedlar's certificates?

Hi KSD

From 1870 it was the County/Borough Police Forces that issued hawkers' and pedlars' certificates and kept registers. I understand that the fees they raised went towards the Police pension funds.

Before 1870, the issuing of certificates came under the jurisdiction of the Quarter Session Courts.

Unfortunately, the survival rate of the post-1870 registers is very poor. Many counties have none.

KSD, there is a book on the travelling Boswell's by John Seymour, "The Book of Boswell" 1970, try Google, cheers....Skoosh.
