Does anyone know where Gravel Walk was (I can't find it on a modern map) in Deal?
It existed until at least 1887, as one of my great great-grandfathers died there.
TIA

Hi Betty,
It must have been part of, or off West Street, in the 1881 census number 2 Gravel Walk is the next entry on the same page as number 11 West Street.
I hope this helps.

Many thanks, Jebber :)
I've just been for a virtual walk around the area courtesy of Goggle street view. I think Gravel Walk must have been about where Sainsbury's is now.
The area has certainly changed since I was last there.
Thanks again for your help.

Hi Betty
Gravel Walk was renamed sometime between the 1870s and 1911 and became St Andrew's Walk. Later, sometime around the end of WW2, it was renamed again and is now called Century Walk. It runs west from West Street, just north of the junction with Stanhope Road, across the southern end of St Andrew's Road to join St Patrick's Road.
Best Wishes, Bill

Many thanks, Bill, that's interesting, & it's nice to know it's still there, albeit with another name.
Another place to add to my 'ancestral trail' list to look at when I'm able to get to Deal :)
Thank you again for your help.

Hello, I'm over there most weeks and need to photograph this for my own family history. I can forward you a copy if you would like. I can promise no time scale thoug as I have a terrible memory :-[

Thank you Karen, a photo would be lovely, it's very nice of you to offer.
The time scale doesn't matter :)
