You have received an abundant supply of information from other contributors but if you require more, I can supply 4 references from the Irish Times from 1859 to 1901 for the Morans at 5 Johnston's Court.

Quaxer, that would be wonderful. The more information I have, the better. Thanks for the offer.

I replied to your private message by a private message for the reason given.
Normally I prefer to use the main board for all replies as I derive a great deal from the input of others and in this case the reply from Shanew gave me the clue s I needed to trace the information you requested.
The Irish Times is on line for a fee while major libraries have the back editions on microfilm. The source work I created runs from March 1859 until 6th April 1901 and covers Dublin City and some South Dublin Suburbs. You may have read the notices about copyright and this board and in this respect you will understand that I would like to adhere to the moderator's wishes and err on the side of caution.
If you can supply further addresses I can check these for the names you gave.
Regards Quaxer

Thank you Quaxer for all your assistance. I am new to using the message board system, so I appreciate your advice on the proper etiquette of posting requests.
I will check on the Irish Times at my library. Thanks again for everything.

Morning everyone,
Beginning my research for two brothers Great grand uncles Christopher and Charles Kavanagh who according to family lore were flour Millers at Alexander Warf, Dublin. Both were born mid 30’s in Wexford and following family eviction moved to Dublin late 40s. That’s sum total of the information I have on these.
Wondering if there are Kavanagh Millers mentioned in Thoms?
Kind Regards
John G.

No Kavanagh (or Cavanagh) millers in 1848, also no mention of Alexandra Wharf..
1863 - no mention of Alexandra Wharf..there's a few Kavanagh is possibily related trades :
Edward Kavanagh, corn & flourstores, 14 Mary's Abbey
Jas. Kavanagh, corn broker, 3 Burgh quay, 22 Robert st (stores), res. 33 Harolds Cross
Michl. Kavanagh, corn factor & malt roaster, 3 Pim st
Mrs. Kavanagh, corn factor & malt roaster,4 Pim st, grand canal
I dont see any sign of Alexandra Basin (which I presume the address you mention was close to and named after) on the 1880s map... so maybe it is dates after this that the address relates to ?

Thanks Shane for that,
I have left these pair on the back burner for years as I had next to nothing to go on. Their Brothers James my great grand father and Thomas lived in Burton Hall during the 1860/70s. So I am hoping this might look familiar to some viewers (fingers crossed)

do you believe the owned a mill business, or could they have been employed in one ?
I had a look through later directories and there are quite a few mills listed in the area - but nothing that I see named Kavanagh.
Shane

Hi Shane,
Unfortunately I cannot confirm whether they owned or just worked as millers, had a quick glimpse through the 1911 census and found a Charles born Co Wexford aged 78 which is close age wise. ::)
Number 29 in Goatstown Town (Dundrum, Dublin)
Charles Kavanagh 78 Born Wexford
Ellen Kavanagh 72 Born Wexford
Johanna Kavanagh 26
2 of 8 children living.
Regards John
-
That certainly looks interesting, and a possible fit..unfortunately that Charles and Ellen married c1861, so just before civil registration started.
The location on the 1911 return is just down the road from the location of the Goat Pub... which has been there for many years..

Shane.... what are the respective parishes for the following areas.
Alexander Warf
Goatstown Town
I will browse ‘Irishgenealogy’ to see if anything there?
Cheers
John
-
I have not seen a street listing yet which mentions Alexandra Wharf, but I suspect would be commercial / dockside rather than residential, but will have a look for for the parish.. probably the same as for Sheriff st.
Goatstown is right at the junction of several RC parishes - but probably Dundrum, or Taney. Less likely parishes would be Sandyford or Monkstown.
Shane
-
Thank you once again Shane,
I just had a look at a map of Dublin, its kind of difficult ever imagining a flour Mill along Alexandra Wharf so I am beginning to wonder if my information is correct in the first place.

Hello,
I am wondering if the 1863 Thoms covers Rathmines a Dublin suburb.
I am looking for Gray family or Nolan family on Belgrave Rd.

....
Belgrave Rd (c35 houses) and square Rathmines are listed ... but no Nolan or Gray entries.
Do you know a house number or trade/occupation, or any other likely addresses for them ?

The Irish Times newspaper for 29th September 1899 shows the death of a Sophia Gray at Belgrave Road ,Rathmines . This is somewhat later than you asked for but might help. Please note that no street no. was given

Thankyou,
Sophia was the sister of Arabella Gray who died in 1866 at Belgrave Road.

Hi all,
Does Thoms list other family members living in a house or is it just the head of the household?
I am trying to find out if a particular Patrick Roe is the father of my gg grandmother Kate Roe (Catherine Mary). She was married in 1872 so I guess she could have been living at home in 1863.
I have seen listings for Patrick in Coles Lane in 1835 (provision dealer & house holder), and at both 169 and 57 Great Britain Street (Bacon Ham & Cheese dealer) in 1850 and 1852 respectively.
At the time of Kates marriage she was living in Capel Street (the part up beside Bolton Street) and she was married in St Marys Church (COI, although as far as I know she was Catholic but married an Englishman) at Jervis Street. Her father Patrick was a "provisions dealer". All of these addresses are within 5 minutes walk of each other.
Thanks, I really do appreciate all and any help you kind souls might be able to come up with.

..
Trade and street directories include the head of household or the business owner only...

I'll check for possible listings for her father later on and let you know how it goes...
what house number on Capel Street was Kate living at in 1872 ?
Shane
-
Thanks Shane, she was living in 95 Capel Street. It was May 1872.
Denise
-
in 1867 :
95 Capel St
James McMahon, coal factor
The only Patrick Roe in the trades index is Sec. Catholic dormitory, 89 Townsend Street, and there are no Roe provision dealers. There is however provision dealer named John Rowe, at 9 Exchange street, upr
I dont see any Roe listings at the other addresses.
Same results for Thom's 1863 except there's a Michael Roe, 2 Creighton st - grocer
1848
66 Gt Britain St, Patk. Roe - prov. dealer
95 Capel St
Henry Ruxton - watchmaker
H. Ruxton - board & lodging house
1840 (Pettigrew & Oulton)
the numbers on Gt Britain st are little different, but there is no Patrick Roe listing in the same section (the equivalent location would be about #57).
