Title: Any help appreciated, Carey, Hedges, Lewis and Bragg
Post by: fancypants on Wednesday 24 March 10 01:06 GMT (UK)
Hi I have drawn a blank when it comes to researching my husbands side of the family further back than Phoebe Hedges born 1863 in Fernhurst Sussex. She was married I believe to Walter Lewis born 1859 in Leytonstone, Essex. At the time of the 1901 census they were in Thursley, Surrey living in a small group of travellers in caravans and tents. Lydia Lewis was my husbands Great Grandmother.

I am also finding it difficult to trace the Carey family links I have an Elias Carey born 1870 in Pitts Gate, Lamberhurst, Kent. He married  Matilda Eyres and then it seems Eliza Hedges. He was at one point in a caravan at Wisley, Surrey.
Elias was my husbands Great Grandad. They have been in the Woking area on and off since the 1850's at least.

Lastly on my side of the family my mothers Grandfather Harry Bragg born 1863 in Peckham, lived in Hampshire but mainly lived in Woking, he was the owner of the Kingfield Arms pub in Kingfield at the time of the 1901 census. Father to 9 youngest being my Grandmother Eva Myrtle born 1910. Some time ago we heard there could be a link to showmen.
I would appreciate any info you may have.
Many thanks

Hi Fancypants

I'm researching Draper as a Gypsy surname - but I also collect references to the surname Carey as some of my Drapers seemed to use it as an alias, so that might be something for you to keep in mind.

The Drapers mainly tended to travel in Herts/Bucks/Beds/Oxon but occasionally dipped down into Berkshire, Surrey and Kent.

I also found the following baptism in my database. Is it one of yours?

CAREY Unity
d of ELIAS and ELIZA CAREY
bp 7 September 1930
Binstead, Surrey
'hop picking'

This came from Jackie Blackman's Passing Through website which - unfortunately - is no longer online.

Best wishes
Sharon

Hello,
this is intresting to me as i have a Jane Hedges marrying Joseph Vinson/Vincent in Guildford march quart 1909.
The 1911 shows:

Joseph Vinson b1881 Tunbridge Wells gypsy hawker
Jane Vinson born 1886 Surrey Shere
Sidney Vinson born 1910 Surrey Shere.

Married 3 years

Living in a tent on common fields,West Horsley nr Leatherhead,Surrey.

Other Vinson/Hedges children registered in Surrey:

John 1912
Joseph 1915
Thomas 1920

Other families with them are Vinson,Cooper,Marney,Parker,Deakins,Gobey and Lee.
On 1901 theres also a family called Junix/Junex.

Like Fancypants and her Hedges, ive been unable to find anything on this Hedges lady before 1911.

I think theres a good chance their connected,if anyone can establish it and find more on her id be very intrested.

The Vinsons are connected to Matthews.

Regards,
Nel.

Just a couple more travelling Hedges in Guildford area,in case it helps.

Cant find a marriage for Alfred or Harry to anyone with these names.
Only Alfred marriage i can find is june quart 1875 Kinston.4 names are:

Cant find Alfred or Harry before 1901.Nothing on 1911 for any of them either.

Intresting also that Elias Carey and Matilda(Eyres) are also stoping in Guildford on 1901,and they too have a son named Jobie.

Cant see Elias and family on any other census, including 1911.

Nel.

Just around the corner oldest son Alfred was living with his new wife Matilda, nee Matthews (my great great grandparents). This Alfred gave his date and place of birth as 1879 in Wolerbury, Kent.
Alfred Snr was the son of James and Eliza  seen together on the 1851 and 1861 census'.

Hi  Don't forget the long correspondence about the Hedges & their relations which we had on this page a few months ago.
I'm still after the Hedges who settled in Reigate.  Also John & Elizabeth Brewer & their children, Eden and Reuben-if you come across a mention, please let me know.  Maggott

Do you have access to 1901 census - these seem to be Hedges/Gobey/Smith families - Hedges has been enumerated "Hedger" though. There is a Janie, age 14, born Shere who would seem to fit with Nelwild's Jane
RG13/601 Folio 92 Page 1 - Netley? Heath, Shere, Surrey

Hi Fancypants

I was wondering if you could share your information on the Lewis side especially the reference to the caravans and gypsies, as my grandfather was a gypsie George Lewis, he was British and was born England and faught in the second world war. I have been told by family memember that his grandmother was the Queen of the gypsies. Unfortunately all of my family on my mother side are deceased so information is a little hard to come by. By sharing your information would help me reduce my research. I have just started though but I will be more then willing to share anything that I find regarding the Lewis family & gypsies.

hi,

i know this thread has long since died off but was wondering if anyone on here had made a connection for Jane Hedges who married Joseph Vinson?

I think she was the daughter of Sampson Hedges b1846, who seems to have sometimes gone by Samson or Samuel, who was in turn the youngest son of Thomas b.1800/1 and Eden Hedges b.1800/1

i would be grateful if anyone could let me know if im right in my thinking.

Thanks

Hello, although this message trail is somewhat old now, I wondered if anyone had more information about Elias Carey mentioned further up. I believe he was my great grandmother's cousin (Unity Lee nee Parker). I think I have a photograph of him in WW1 uniform and I wondered if there was any family recollection of him serving in the Labour Corps. It's a long shot, but it would be great if anyone could help me put the final pieces of the puzzle together.
