Cherry Island, West Ham was apparently home to a gypsy camp, according to an article about West Ham in a book quoted here: http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=42748
"Building continued steadily throughout the 1860s. The southern portion of the Upton 'Manor' estate, including Pelly Road, was being developed in 1866. (fn. 103) At the same time Canning Town was spreading eastwards. Among developments there were Hudson's estate, including Hudson's Road, and Ireland's estate, including Denmark Street. (fn. 104) Near those was Cherry Island, a small market-garden partly surrounded by marsh ditches. (fn. 105) There, about 1868, a speculator laid out Edwin, Bradley, and Thomas Streets, and built a number of squalid cottages which were a nuisance to the local board for many years. (fn. 106) Cherry Island was also a resort of gipsies, whose clean and orderly camp compared favourably with the cottages."

@ Sandra S
Well, your G-grandmother was 1st cousin to my grandfather so that must make us some sort of cousin. I can claim two of the other families living there as well.
My memories of Canning Town reflect yours very much, I had a lot of family who lived in the area all their life and frequented Kent, mainly a village called Yalding, for hop-picking in the summer. For all that my ancestors will have originated from Gods knows where, I've always thought of Canning Town as the main base area for the recent generations.

Got that, Sandra, thanks.
BTW, although this doesn't specifically mention Cherry Island, there was a report written by Charles Dickens in 1857 on the area that Cherry Island was included in that makes interesting reading. At that point in time, the part of Canning Town on the south side of the Barking Road was called Hallsville and it was noted for its fetid atmosphere and high level of disease. I've also seen it written that the gypsy encampments were a whole lot cleaner and healthier than the surrounding streets and houses thrown up to house the dock workers...
It can be found here...

Thank you for this information. The Deacons were from Surrey and Hampshire (so far, back to the 1760's), but my husband's DNA ethnicity shows historical connections to two distinct DNA communities in Ancestry: Iran/Persia and Northern India!
I also wondered about 'Cherry Island' when I came across it on Rachel Smith's 1911 census. Rachel was my husband's 2nd great aunt through Thomas 'Deakins' and Rachel Franklin.
His Deacons tree is public on Ancestry: 'DNA Linked: Deacons & James, Slade & Pilcher'.
Regards, Debbie :)
