Would be grateful for any ideas at all as to what Jane Armstrong's job is on the attached.
If it helps I think the first letter is probably an H going by other writing on the return but am stumped on the rest! Possibly Handloom something??
The other members of the family either worked in the cotton mill, railway or iron works and the other households on the return are a mixed bunch with nothing that looks similar. On the 1881 Jane is listed as a dressmaker.
This family are just full of problems, dissapearing menfolk, disappearing altogether and now this!
Thanks in advance
Sue

Hi,
What census is it from? Do you have the ref? The second word could be 'Duty'...
Regards, Emma ;)

Could it be Housemaid daily? Although I agree the second word does look like duty.
-
A ha! 'Household Duty'? Glamming up the housewife role I wonder?
Regards, Emma ;)

It's the 1871 Carlisle Census - RG10 / 5218 Folio 123 p 31 entry 196.
Household duty could be the right answer - my family were always good at making something sound more than it was......!

Hi Sue,
It looks like Demonstrator Duty to me.
Maybe she was a demonstrator at the cotton mill.
Cheers

Household duty ??
-
Hi
Yes, it's household duty and that's why it's been crossed out ie. she didn't go out to work as she was a housewife.
