Post by: sue9 on Sunday 21 March 10 17:03 GMT (UK)
Hi

I have a marriage of Samuel Lewry and Mary Field married in Cuckfield 9/1/1782.
They were married with parents consent does anyone know the names of the parents,
also did  they have any children.
Thanks
Sue

Hi
The original register is hard to read.  It does say something after "with the consent of parents" but I cannot make it out.  He signed and Mary made her mark.  Witnesses James Field and James Short both signed.
I see you live in West Sussex so possibly you could visit the record office or if you are near Cuckfield the church office has certain years of the registers available to view.  Not sure which but it might cover this time.

I have had a quick look at the baptisms and none so far for a child of Samuel and Mary Lewry.  Have got to 1794 and the first Lewry entry is for Fanny, dau of Charles and Mary Lewry.
There are several for children James and Mary Field (pauper) and Michael and Sarah Field.
Perhaps they went to live in another parish?

Hi Andrea

Thanks for the info
I'm looking the Thomas Lewry parents - Thomas was married in Bolney to Mary Mansbridge 1808 but cant find a birth of Thomas there is a ? mark with his name Lewry/Field.
My mum lives in Cuckfield - is the church office at the old school!
I do go to East Sussex Record but as yet not got to Chichester which covers Cuckfield and Bolney.
Could you have a look and see if Mary Field had a child before she married Samuel Lewry.

Thanks
Sue

Yes, the church office is at the Old School.  Open weekday mornings.
There are no Samuel Lewry entries in the Bolney registers up to 1812.  However there does seem to be one which says child of "Thomas and Mary Field or Lewry".  William baptised in 1809, Oct 15.  Is that your connection?
Searched Cuckfield baptisms starting from 1780 to 87  and there isn't a child of Mary Field then.  Though they are hard to read.
There is one for James and Mary Field.  Thomas bap 31 Aug 1788.
No Lewry entries at all.
Have you tried Slaugham?   A lot of Cuckfield folk were baptised there.

I am doing a One Name Study on the Lewry name and can help you with this family.  If you go to the Guild of One Name Studies website www.one-name.org and type in Lewry you can find out more and contact me directly.
Look forward to hearing from you

Hi Andrea,

Thanks you for looking up this info I will take a look at Denise one-name site.
I will also pop in to the Old School. (I used to go to school there many years ago!!)

I'm trying to find the birth of Thomas 'Thomas and Mary Field or Lewry'  was Thomas a Lewry or Field
Do you know when James and Mary Field married!
Thomas is buried in Bolney next to other Lewrys which possibly are his parents and grandparents.

Hi Denise
I will have a look - I did go the the Lewry meeting in Slaugham a couple of years ago which you arranged.
Thanks for help
Sue
