Can anyone help me puzzle this out? I am quite new to genealogy and finding my way slowly. I have Mary Ogilvie b 1799 as mother of Ellison Whyte - my great grandmother. However I have a dubious set of parents for Mary - Mary Smith 1769 - 1853 and Elijah White 1768 - 1831. Mary was the only child in the family not to have the White surname. To confuse things even further Ellison married a George Whyte. HELP! M

What info did you use for the parents of Mary Ogilvie? parish registers etc
Then you say Mary didn't have the surname of the siblings? info from?
Always hard before census are available..what county/parish
if you can perhaps ask on appropriate board someone may have more knowledge/resources to help
Good hunting

I see this IGI (submitted) record for Ellison:
ELLISON WHYTE
Baptised: 14 April 1825
Glasgow, Lanarkshire
Parents: GEORGE WHYTE and MARY OGILVIE
Being a submitted record it is inherently unreliable without corroboration. Do you have anything more concrete on Ellison's parentage (such as e.g. a Scottish marriage and/or death certificate)? Given what you have said, might OGILVIE have been a previous married name rather than a maiden name for Mary?

Scottish records gave the mother's maiden name in most cases. It seems the submitter didn't realise this so,Mary Whyte nee Ogilvie appears to be the mother but as avm228 has said you have to view this with caution.

Edit:submitters often worked on the assumption women were 21 & men 25 when they married & also gave their birthplace where they married..which often proved wrong.
There is a Mary Ogilvie birth Lanark. 1798 to Thomas Ogilvie & Isabella Buchanan.

I need to check back my sources - not with me at the moment, but from memory Mary was listed as a child with the family as Ogilvie.
