Title: (Completed) Statter Family - Census Look Up Please
Post by: natterjack72 on Sunday 21 March 10 15:56 GMT (UK)
Hi, I am trying to research part of my own family, using a bit of research my father has already done.

My 3 x great grandparents were Edward Statter (born circa 1795) and Mary Dover (born circa 1798) and I am the decendant of Elizabeth Statter (born circa 1835 in Liverpool).  It is known that Edward was a surgeon in Lime Street and that at least one of his son's; possibly Richard (born circa 1826 in Liverpool) also became a surgeon.  Richard is presumed to have married a lady named Mary (born circa 1826), presumably from Lincolnshire, but I have found a record of a possible marriage in March quarter 1846 in Blackburn with the surname Smith.

Would anyone help me by searching the census records from 1841, please?

The other siblings of interest are:
Edward Statter - born circa 1820, Lancaster.. would only be on the 1841 census, as apprently died the following year.

Agnes Statter born circa 1821 Lancaster, married John Richardson, born circa 1820, Liverpool.

Mary Statter born circa 1823, Lancashire, married Gerard Horby; he died after 1855, but no other information.

Thomas Statter born circa 1838, Liverpool.  Presumed to have become a watchmaker.

Elizabeth's sister Sarah Statter married Montegue Watts Doubleday, I have a fair amount about them at present and I know many of this family moved out of the area later on in life.

I would also be greatful if someone could trace Elizabeth for me in Lancashire as far as they can please.  I do know she moved elsewhere later, but I am unsure when.  She never married, but we do find reference to a man with the surname Duffin from time to time, possibly the father to her two children. Lily and James.

I hope someone can help.

Regards and thanks for any future help on this large task.

Liz

Thanks this is great, it all seems to fit nicely and has given me a few more leads to follow up on; as well as answer questions I've needed answering.

Thanks ever so much Rambler.

Just a quickie I think, can anyone find Elizabeth anywhere in 1871 in Lancashire, else not I'll try London and other possible places.  As I now want to know where she disappeared to when she left her 2 young children.. with by all accounts isn't actually a relative, even though it says so.

Thanks and regards, as always

I found one possibility in Hertfordshire, but none (so far) in Lancs:

1871
RG10/1332/112/24 - East Barnet, Herts
Elizabeth STATTER - 31 - ???? - Liverpool

The handwriting is difficult to read - the surname looks more like Slatter, and I've no idea what the occupation says!

She may have died in Islington not long after:

Deaths Jun 1875
STATTER  Elizabeth          39
Islington 1b 136

Hi,

Her occupation reads Interest of Money and rents? of property.

Her age actually is 33.

Thank you,

just out of interest, was she living with anyone else at the time?  I didn't expect to see her in Hertfordshire, I've no idea what she is doing up there.. though I have a suspicion.

As we have on a document the mention of a James Duffin, but we are not sure if it is the name of the father to her children or a name her son had his name changed to a couple of years later.

I can't find James on the 1881 census at all for some reason, though I am sure I have found it in the past.  And as for Lilly, well I have already been told they spelt her name wrong on the 1881 census and she is living in London, but I still can't find her.

Would anyone mind looking for James on the 1891 census for me and perhaps Lilly too... I don't think they were together by then though.

Thanks again as always,

Regards,

Liz

I know pretty much all all about Lilly,  though I have been told that the marriage took place 24 January 1900 at Countess of Huntingdon Connexion in Margate and it was believed that James was married to Adeline Wass in 1897 Colchester, Essex.

But any information greatfully received.  Especially the 1901 census info.

Thanks again and regards,

Liz

Thanks so much, it's very nice to see that James and Lilly stayed close by.  I'll have to ask my dad if he knows those houses... though they are probably house numbers by now... as he grew up in Garlinge himself.. a couple of doors up from where his grandparents lived at some point.. so could still be the same house.  Lilly and William were his grandparents.

Again, thank you

With kind regards,

Liz

I am interested in your Statter Family research, mine links to the same family via Elizabeth's sister Sarah who married Montague Watts Doubleday, I have quite a lot of info about the family if you would like to get in touch.

thanks Janet

Dear Liz,

I have just started researching the life and work of Richard Dover Statter.  You may know that he wrote a world-renowned pamphlet on the decimalisation of time.  Related to this is a watch in the collection of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers with a dial laid out for decimal 'reading'.  The watch was apparently made by Richard's brother Thomas.  So far I have been unable to discover much about Thomas, and certainly nothing to verify that he did indeed work as a watchmaker. Have you found anything more about the brothers please?

Regards.

Hi
I picked up your request for info about Thomas Statter brother of Richard Dover Statter.
Thomas was born in Liverpool 20 Sept 1838 he is listed on the 1861 Census in Bare  Morecambe as a watch maker, he died in 1868 and his trade was a watch maker, he left a will, the address on the will calendar was Coperas Hill Liverpool.
I have more info on this family I am researching his sister Sarah family.

I could snd you copies of the above if I have your email, regards Janet

Dear Janet,

Thanks - that's very kind of you.  I will send you a note of my e-mail address separately.

Sorry to see that Thomas, like his brother, died whilst only in his thirties; ironic since Richard and dad Edward were doctors, (and I have found a few newspaper reports of Edward being involved in inquests).

Richard's work on time measurement is a well respected work, but maybe he felt uncomfortable about having spent time/effort on it at the possible expense of his medical calling, as he used only his middle name for authorship purposes: Dover Statter.

On an incidental, mundane note, I also found details of a legal dispute over payment for a suit!

With kind regards.

David
