I am looking for any information on Donald McLAREN born 1854 in Bonawe, Argyllshire. Later lived with wife Christine b 1855 approx in Greenock. I have them in 1891 and 1901 census and have lots of information after that. But parents names, maiden name of his wife, date and place of marriage and when they moved to Greenock would be great. Thank you to anyone who can help. M

Hi Maupet
do Donald and Christine have children in the census returns
this may give some clues to the parents names
http://www.inverclyde.gov.uk/GetAsset.aspx?id=fAA1ADcAMwAwAHwAfABGAGEAbABzAGUAfAB8ADAAfAA1
quite a few McLarens on there
doing a general search on SP I cant see a marriage for a Donald McLaren with
bride Christine
the name Donald is sometimes interchangeable with Duncan or Daniel
but cant see a marriage using any of these
best bet is their childrens names

Thanks Elaine and Ev. This is the Donald, my ggrandfather, Richard was my grandfather, but was not expecting the English connection! Our roots are firmly in Scotland and almost all stayed in Greenock, but family must have lived down south at some time. I too could not find the marriage but only looked Scotland. A reminder not to narrow the mind! Thank you once again. Maureen

Hi Maureen
I know what you mean I would never have believed anyone who
said my family stayed any where else other than Greenock/Port Glasgow
until I found G/Grandfather who was born Northumberland after that
I started finding them all over the place,
my McCorkindales lived a 56 drumfrochar Road at the same time and my GGranfather was born the
same year as Richard just a nice wee thought that they may have been friends playing together
sadly the building doesn't exist anymore

Yes, nice thought. They went on to live in Holmscroft Street and my uncle, Richard's son lived there until his death. Are you still in Greenock or did you escape? Actually I have vague memories of my mother talking about friends called McCorkindale. There comes a time when we all wish we had actually listened to our parents.
I also found my uncle and mother's birth as well as grandparents marriage on the link to the Greenock telegraph you gave me. I already knew the dates but there was some extra info so thanks again for that.
