Hi All,
I am curious to now if there is anywhere that I might look to see if there are old (very old) copies of local papers. I know we all get them now, but my Great Grandad was from Salford and he died in July 1916 and has a commemorative Headstone in Weaste Cemetery - I wondered if this is something that may have been mentioned in a local paper at the time. William was a Lance Corporal and died of his wounds on the way home from France. He left behind a wife and five children, the youngest of which was my Grandad, Any help would be really appreciated,
Vikki

Hi,
There are some local newspapers held at Manchester Library, but you need to be quick as that department closes on 1st April, and when it reopens in temporary building those newspapers will not be available. (until 2013/14) :(
Salford Chronicle 1873-1916
Salford Reporter 1886-1988
You could check with Salford Library,
I recently was searching the Manchester Evening News for someone from Stockport, and found them mentioned there in 1916. It appeared exactly the same word for word in a paper in Stockport.
The newspapers actually had adverts asking for families to notify them, if they received word that their husband/father etc had been killed. Most were only mentioned if they notified the newspaper.
Cancan :)

Salford Local History Library holds many local newspapers from the late 1800's.
Its located at the The Museum/Art Gallery on the Crescent.

Hi Debbie,
We had some help from Gerald and we have actually found two headstones naming William George Earle. On the far side of the Cemetary is the one listed on the War Graves listings and at the front of the cemetary is the family one where he is named along with his wife Ada and his father-in-law, Booth Kay.
My Mum and I have been to visit and i have pictures if you need them. Send me a PM and I can forward them on for you!
Kind regards
Vikki

Hi Vikki.
No problem-just fishing really. If there were it might have given me clue on a family mystery.
Thanks anyway.

Try http://www.spinningtheweb.org.uk/bookbrowse.php
The site has a national roll of honour for the great war, of Salford and Manchester people, I have found 3 rellies on this which gives regiment and even home address.
Good luck
