Can anyone help with information regarding my great grandfather. His name was John Flanagan born 1836/37.The 1861 census sayes he was born in Drogheda . His farthers name was Thomas Flanagan who we think was a teacher or college lecturer. John had two or more brothers who were sent to austrailia but John came to Bolton England in approx 1857 aged 21. Any info on the Irish side would be great.

civil registration only began in Ireland in 1864, before that you need to search church records. These are available on the IFHF pay-per-view site. There is no record showing of a John Flanagan with the father Thomas. There is however a John Flanagan born in Drogheda in 1837 whose father is listed as John. You would have to pay €5 to view the record. Be aware that these records are transcribed from the original registers and there are errors and omissions

Thanks for the info,
Ive since established that I might have the wrong John Flanagan. His Father was Thomas but he was a farm labourer I found this on Johns marrage certificate. John is listed as coming from Dublin on 1911 census. I also know that he had older brothers at least 2 who were sent to australia.
Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.

you might get a better response if you post in the Dublin forum. A quick look at the available church records on the IFHF site shows 2 John Flanagans with a father Thomas. Both born in the St. Pauls, Arran Quay parish of North Dublin Diocese. One in 1830 the other in 1832. Possible the 1st John died and the next boy was named John again, this often occured where a baby died. The Dublin city Church records aren't available online yet as far as I know (I'm open to correction). The fact that Thomas was a farm labourer suggests he was not in the city centre. It could also mean that he moved around a lot as labourers tended to follow the available work & all births won't show up in the one parish.
