Title: Dale Rovers 1922 - 23?
Post by: maccalenny on Friday 19 March 10 20:30 GMT (UK)
Hi - I have this photo, and have looked on the internet, unsuccessfully, to find out  bit more about the team. I'm guessing they are a Nottingham club as that was where my family were living at the time. Anyone know any more - I would be most grateful for any clues.

Hi

Dale Rovers were indeed a Nottingham club.

I can't yet identify the Shield in the photograph but I can tell you that the club won the Nottinghamshire FA Junior Challenge Cup in 1926-7

I'll see what else I can find out.

Hello again !

Looked at this yesterday....somehow it didn't rergister with me that you were the poster. The name rang a bell immediately & checked with my mother this morning & we're pretty sure it's a team connected with Sneinton Dale.  Think my great grandfather used to play for them.....although he wouldn't have been on this photo. Mum's got some stuff which would tell her which team he played for, so she's going to have a look at it. Sorry for the silence....have been pretty busy etc etc, but will get back to you after Easter if not before.....greetings to your mother.

Hello as well to Red Fred....hope the Red stands for what I think it does........

No....it would have been my grandfather. Sure I've seen that little man on the left (not a player....the one in the hat ) in a photo somewhere. The fattish man on the right looks rather like my grandfather, but I don't remember him being so fat (I never met him)....it could be him....sure I've seen this photo before. Pity I can't show it to my mother

Oh......you know who my grandfather was......Don't know if your mother would recognise him....you could ask her if it's the fat chap on the far right. Otherwise, I could ask my brother if you could send him the photo via email & my mother could look at it there.

Hello Kate and greyingrey

Yes I agree that Sneinton Dale was likely to have been the club's home area - but I'm still on the case.

The "Red" indeed has a Nottingham football connotation !

The Fred comes from my school nickname but is also my middle name.

Hello Fred......knew you were on the side of the angels ! (Someone used to write to the Footie Post under the pen name of Red Fred.....was he someone in your family tree ?).  My mother won't be able to help with Dale Rovers generally....she found out my grandfather's things (her father in law) & he had a couple of medals for playing in the "???? (can't remember) & W. Bridgford Thursday League 1909/1910"....when he would have been in his teens. (But he lived in the Sneinton Dale area). They had a Thursday afternoon league for men who worked in shops....they'd have had to work Saturdays but got half day holidays on Thursday (well, sure you know this)

I've definitely seen that photo before, though....could have just been in the Footie Post sometime.....but I'd like my mother to look at it to see if she thinks that could be my grandfather (although this would have been taken before she was born)

Hi

They were fallen angels last night !

The Nottingham Thursday League folded a few years ago.  You are right, the teams were made up of half holiday shop workers, City and County Police teams, ditto Fire Brigade, RAOC or maybe REME (Chilwell), etc. etc.

I used to watch games on the Victoria Embankment playing fields after school.

Hi Maccalenny
I'm still making enquiries about Dale Rovers though a possible source of information could be the "Bygones" Section in the Nottingham Evening Post.  David Lowe is the editor to whom you can submit photos with a request for info.  His e-mail address at the paper is david.lowe@nottinghameveningpost.co.uk.

Hi both, many thanks for this. The obvious connection - Sneinton Dale - had not crossed my mind! I'm sure the pic can't have any of my direct family  - my g-grandad too old, my grandad too young - but I like the thought that it could be your grandad! I'm away over Easter, but will send it in to the Nottingham newspaper you mentioned when I return, to see what they make of it.

Cheers

Hi Kate

I think I have identified the shield in the photo.

Having looked more closely at the players, the majority of them seem quite young.

I therefore looked at the winners of the Nottinghamshire FA Youth Shields.  A new youth football shield was awarded from season 1919-20 and called the Notts Junior Shield (played for by Under 16's).  Dale Rovers won the Shield in three successive seasons 1921-22, 1922-23 and 1923-4.

The Shield is still presented and I have asked a colleague who works at Notts FA to examine the shield for me to confirm the above.

Finally I have spoken to a couple of very old gentlemen who used to be local referees.  One of the can remember refereeing Dale Rovers up to the 1960's when the club played at the White City Greyhound Track on Daleside Road, Nottingham.  This was south of Sneinton and close to the River Trent.

The club no longer exists but you may get some more info. if the local paper prints the photo

Hi Kate

I have looked at the Notts FA Junior Shield and it does bear the name of Dale Rovers on it.

Interestingly the Shield was donated to Notts FA by Moss Empires in 1903 and was originally named the Notts FA Empire Shield.

It has an engraved centre piece showing a football match in progress.
