Hello, I am wondering if SKS can do a look-up for two people for me.
!;William Hatcher, farmer, of London Fields,
and 2; Charles Gentry, brickmaker, also of London Fields
Thanks for any help, cheers, Lance

Can you supply birthyears please
There are only 2 Charles Gentry entries in Middlesex and neither was a brickmaker

Hi Carol, I have a father and son, both named Charles Gentry, one born about 1794 in Gt Totham, Essex and the son born about 1822 in London somewhere.
I got the brickmaker occupation of the father and the location from the son's wedding certificate.
Hope this helps, cheers, Lance

Hi
The residency in 1844 of the married couple Charles Gentry letter carrier (a necessary residency of three weeks only prior to the marriage) gives no indication that either father was ever from that area or in the case of Charles Gentry the brickmaker, ever in London, or that either father was still alive, as the placing of the word deceased on marriage certificates for fathers was never a requirement and merely the custom of practice of some officials but not the custom and practice of many other.
see the previous posting on Gentrys for further information

Ann Gentry aged 27 married at St James Shoreditch in 1857 to Walter Henry Robert Gentry who probably died in 1859. On her marriage she gave her father's name as Charles Gentry brickmaker deceased.
1861 census RG9 160 folio 23?
39 Church Street Hackney
Ann Gentry 31 Head Widow Laundress Beckingham Essex
Walter Gentry 2 Son Finsbury Middlesex
Mary Humber 9 Months Boarder Shoreditch
She married again to William Miller Lambard in 1868 at St Matthew Bethnal Green. This time there was no mention on the marriage that Charles was deceased. On the 1871 census Ann gave her birthplace as Halstead and on the 1881 census she stated Totham - her age varies. There is an Ann Gentry aged 13 in Maldon Essex a servant on the 1841 census.
Totham parish registers seem the ones worth searching in particular for the Gentry family.
If William Hatcher had a daughter baptised in 1815 then his birth would have to have taken place in the 1790s or before. In Middlesex on the 1841 census there appears to be only one, a shoe maker.

No one seems to have metioned the following Chrles gentry:
1841: Hamlet of Mile End New Town - Stepney - Middlesex
Charles Gentry...45...Labourer...N (N= not born in county)
Labourer could be any kind of labourer - including Bricklabourer - i have come across this before

Another entry on the Family search gives this:

Hi Joanne
see the link to the other posting in the previous post which details the Charles Gentry marriage to Mary Ann Hatcher. If Lance is correct from his last post on that topic the Charles Gentry he is interested in was born in Great Totham Essex in 1794. The Charles Gentry on the 1841 census aged 45 a labourer in Mile End New Town is probably Charles Streeter Gentry who married Ann Minchin in Mile End in 1842 and is a waterman in Stepney aged 58 and born Sussex, with his wife and step sons on the 1851 census. He was a coachman on his marriage and gave his father as Richard Gentry deceased. That Charles died in 1856.

Thanks ... have done a bit of fossicking about on NZ records and found Charles gentry and mary Ann came to NZ on the Mariner in 1849 - so at least i know to stop looking for them in the 1851 census. They had two wee children listed with thtem and other children born in NZ before Charles died.
Bye for now regards Joanne

Thanks to you both for the messages.
I think Charles(1822) is the son of Charles(1794) from Gt Totham and I have followed this line back to Matthew Gentry of Gt Totham.
The only info I have on Charles' wedding certificate(1844) is that her father's name is William Hatcher from London Fields and I have followed the line to Nelson, NZ
Charles(1794) wife was Catherine Cottee which is another story altogether as I can't find any other reference to her.
Cheers, Lance

Hi
There is no evidence from the 1844 marriage that William Hatcher was of London Fields. The marriage merely states for the three weeks prior to the marriage Mary Ann Hatcher (of full age so probably left home to work as a servant some years ago) was living in London Fields. It doesn't tell you where she was born (though her New Zealand death certificate hopefully would) or where her parents were living (if they were still living).
Charles Gentry also states his place of residency as London Fields on the marriage but you know he was born in Essex and that was where his parents probably lived and died.
