Good afternoon,
Have hit a brick wall and hoping some kind person may be able to assist me.
I have a death record for Jane / Jean Stirling which states she was buried in John Stirlings Haef Lair at St Mungo's Old.
Record included details of charges for the hearse and two horses etc so I am assuming that the 'Lair' is probably inscribed as her family must have had money.
Jane was married to David Croll (20 Mar 1831) and died 03 Mar 1844 aged 32, record states lived at Stobcross at time of death.
I do not have her parents nor date of birth just an approximation of 1812 for her birth.
Query whether John Stirling was her father? Her second son is named John.
No data on her husband David Croll death or burial but a few snippets from his marriage til 1871.
Does anyone have access to MI records for this cemetery?
My MI's do not cover Lanarkshire although if anyone needs any help with Fife Deaths then please let me know.
I have googled to no avail.
With thanks,
Dollydebs

Hi dollydebs,
Might be worth your while contacting Glasgow & West of Scotland FHS as it appears they have an ongoing project to survey St. Mungo's (or Glasgow Cathedral Burying Ground).
Have a look here: http://www.gwsfhs.org.uk/content/projects.aspx
I don't know how current the above page is, but I'm sure if you were to get in touch, they'd let you know one way or another.
The Mitchell Library also has a number of burial records and MI's, the following link should take you to the pdf. file containing all the info (I couldn't see anything for either Glasgow Cathedral or St. Mungo's though).
http://www.glasgow.gov.uk/NR/rdonlyres/CD3FE900-C0E9-48F0-8FCA-5B1D481C0970/0/Monumental_Inscriptions_Jan10.pdf
Might be listed under something else :-\ ?

I'm a numpty!!
If you enter 'glasgow cathedral' in the search field (once you open the pdf. file from the Mitchell) - there's a couple of listings.
(I must have spelt it wrongly or just had 'one of those moments'!

Hi Anne,
Many thanks for these links; I shall email gwsfhs and ask for an update on their projects.
I did find Lanarkshire Glasgow St Mungo's Burying Ground: lair owners
Glasgow Cathedral Burying Ground: Monumental Inscriptions & Lair Owners
2004 Fairie, J Scott & Miller, Susan
on the Mitchell link - how does this library work? I am assuming you would have to visit in person or do they do online requests?
Live in Sussex so my research is online only :(
Thanks again,
Dollydebs ;D

Dolly, there were Crolls, merchants in Glasgow, West Indies Spice Merchants, I think they had a house on Bute. Possibly originally from Perthshire, names Stirling & Miller also merchants......Skoosh.

Hi Skoosh,
Thanks for the tip on the Stirling family, I have to admit I have drawn a complete blank on Janes lineage; spent loads on SP with no results. :(
As to the Crolls or Crowles, David was a Ships Carpenter Journeyman, his father also David a Wright / Carpenter. David senior was married to Catherine Downie who's father was a Collier.
Reckon this is going to be one of those branches of which I will have to buy loads of neurofen for! ;D

Hi Dolly,
The Mitchell will do a search but the time involved/search results might vary a great deal. Worth pursuing though.
Many Rootschatters visit the library quite regularly, so why not start a new thread asking for a 'Mitchell Library Burials Search/Look-up', adding as much info as you can and with a bit of luck, someone will do it for you.
As for the neurofen .....? ;D ;D

Have a wee look at this Dolly: (Who's who is Glasgow)
http://gdl.cdlr.strath.ac.uk/eyrwho/eyrwho0210.htm
The last paragraph in particular. Could the David Croll mentioned be any relation? If so, there seems to be quite a few articles about him to be found if you Google 'David Croll, Glasgow'

Hi Dollydeb,
I am descended from David Croll and Jane Stirling via 3rd child William m Susan Anderson Smith. David Croll (bapt 10 Dec, 1807 Milton of Campsie) died in Dunoon 24 December 1883 76 years (death details provided by John Dick neighbour does not give wife's name but states son of David Croll carpenter and Catherine (Downie). Excited to get Jane Stirling's death. Have been hunting for years. Have info re children of the couple and their descendants and like you can't get back further than David Croll and Catherine Downie. Keen to share info. Re info in last post on William Body Anderson - he is the son in law of David (son of David and Jane Stirling). He was drowned in a boating accident with my g grandfather William. Does anyone know how I can access newsreports of an accident on the Gareloch 20 July 1888. robnewt

Hi Rob,
Great to hear from you and to find a family link ;D
Have literally just returned from holiday but will hook out my data ont he family as I have quite a bit on the Crolls.
Jane Stirling still proving to be a headache but I think a copy of the St Mungos Lair Owners and MI booklet has arrived during my absence so I may have more to add to the tree fingers crossed.
Will be in touch, do you have a tree on Ancestry?
My link is via Williams brother David who is my great great grandfather and I have info on David Croll and Catherine Downies parents.

Hi Anne,
Thank you so much, I will have a look at the link shortly as I returned from holiday a couple of hours ago and turned on the computor to catch up on my emails whilst the kettle was boiling and the first wash went on! ;D

Hi Debs,
So pleased to make contact. Not on ancestry - like you have lots of info on Crolls in Glasgow and the Dumbarton Rope Works. How do we go about sharing? My info is all on word docs. Lost all my gedcom a few years back with a computer crash but fortunately had hard and stick copies of the word docs - it's just the thought of all that work typing it back in!!!! Excited to hear you have more info on David and Catherine as I had come to a dead end and was waiting until our next trip to UK. (Live in Sydney Aust). By the way my second name is Stirling after Jane so have been very keen to learn more about her - only have family snippets as to why the name has carried down the generations. This is my first contact with rootschat so a bit of a novice but really keen to exchange what I have.

Hi again Deb,
Looks like I will have to rejoin Ancestry. That's OK unless you can think of another way we can exchange email addresses. In the meantime will paste below limited info I have on David and Catherine.

My link is via Williams brother David who is my great great grandfather and I have info on David Croll and Catherine Downies parents.
Debs, I'm interested in all Downies and intrigued by the different locations where the children of this couple were born as it is quite unusual for people to move about so much at that time. Who are Catherine's parents and where was she born?
Ian Downie, Aberdeen

Hi Ian,
Thanks for the interest and hopefully there will be a link with what you know about the Downies.
