hi, whitstable, i have heard of the names you mention. but i have not looked up any. there is a good site to start, it is called romany genes, there are also many sites with romany names and connections on line, that should come up with info if you type in romany links, most have free, and pay sites.try looking at occupations,ie hawkers traders dealers. olso look at other names that marry in,they can help in finding out if your conected to gypsys. good luck. rob g

Hi Whitstable
Try this site, http://romanyconnections.wetpaint.com/

Yes, lots of Roberts in Sussex and Kent. The 1911 census on Find my Past might help you, or ordering certificates.

Hi,
It seems we may have the same people connected to our trees.
I have Sarah Ann Blackman married to Joseph Ripley at Hailsham Sussex and their daughter Maria Ripley then married William Brazil.
Sarah and Joseph 's son Henry married Priscilla Beaney
It appears Sarah was a prisoner in Lewes Gaol and House of Correction at the time of the 1861 census. but have not been able to trace why.
Sarahs father was Henry Blackman but I have been unable to trace any thing else on the Blackman family prior to the marriage of Sarah and Joseph.
Their are also (amongst many others) Hughes,Thompson, Chainey and Bird (Burd) within the tree.
If our trees are touching on the same family I wondered if you might have any additional information which you would be prepared to share, particularly relating to the Sarah Ripley (nee Blackman) and her family.
Many Thanks

I have lots of info but way to much to type out here. My tree is uploaded to Genes Reunited, do you have access to that site? Otherwise if you ask specific questions I'll do my best to give you what I know. I dont know why Sarah was in prison but visiting the areas record office may have the jail's records/assizes records.

Hi Rebekah
Thanks for the prompt response. I have just joined Genes Reunited so hopefully would be able to view your tree through that if thats ok with you.
I appreciate your help so thanks again.

Hi Whitstable
Tried the site myself from the page, and worked alright, opened the site so i could take a look, and opened the update just to see if the site would let me do that, and it worked fine.
it maybe that the site says that the username that you tried to enter was unavailable, is that it is being used by a member, try another username, hope this helps, sorry about the delay in answering.
I also have strong Beaney and Ripley lines in my tree,

Hi All,
I think my Family maybe related to the Gypsies - Sarah Ann Blackman who married a Joseph Ripley and went to jail in 1861. I believe one of her children may have been by another man - Samuel Muggeridge who was an artist? The child is John William Ripley born 1860 and then married an Emma Holmes in 1883 in Gravesend. Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Bevali

This Ripley family has been quite extensively researched.I have quite a bit of info myself.Naomi married John Penfold,a showman, and theyre both buried in Faversham cemetary in same grave.
Their daughter Naomi Penfold married Joseph OBrien in Elham in 1903.Joseph was the nephew of Elizabeth OBrien and William Spain. His parents were Michael, known as The Baron of Barham, and Elvina(Elvy) nee Baker.

Why did Sarah Blackman go to prison?! Regarding the Holmes, there are some Romany gypsy 'Holmes' in Kent and Sussex still in caravans.
