Title: Elgin Parish Records
Post by: Lewy on Monday 21 March 05 15:10 GMT (UK)
I would like to find the mother of my relation Kate Gertrude DAVIDSON born circa 1877 in Elgin. Her father was Robert James Davidson listed as a Gentleman on her marraige certificate.

I'm not sure of the scottish system for ordering birth certificates - can anyone point me in the right direction??

Hi Lewy,

The following is from the 1881 Cencus:

Dwelling:   4 Albert Place
Census Place:   Aberdeen Old Machar, Aberdeen, Scotland
Source:   FHL Film 0203449     GRO Ref    Volume 168-2    EnumDist 28    Page 5
                   Marr   Age   Sex   Birthplace
Robert DAVIDSON   M   35    M   Rayne, Aberdeen, Scotland
   Rel:   Head
Occ:   Commission Agent Wines & Spirits
Helen DAVIDSON   M   32    F   Elgin, Elgin, Scotland
   Rel:   Wife
Frederick C. DAVIDSON    9    M   Elgin, Elgin, Scotland
   Rel:   Son
   Occ:   Scholar
Constance H. DAVIDSON    8    F   England
   Rel:   Daur
   Occ:   Scholar
Kate G. DAVIDSON       3    F   Elgin, Elgin, Scotland
   Rel:   Daur
Elsie THOMSON   U   23    F   Fyvie, Aberdeen, Scotland
   Rel:   Serv
   Occ:   Genl Serv (Domes)

From this you can see where the family were at the time of the Cencus and names, ages and occupations of Kate's parents.

Hope this helps.

Anne

I got the info from the LDS 1881 CD's. You can buy them either by areas or the whole set which will cost around 20 pounds (for the whole set). I recently got the updates Scottish set which comes as a set of 2 and costs about 6 pounds.

The 1881 Cencus is widely available on the internet on the same format as I sent you. If you want a copy of the actual image, your local library or nearest Family History Society will most likely have a copy.

Get back to me if you want any more info. If all else fails, you could get the image from Scotland's People - but it will cost!

hi there,

i also have the 1881 census, and after looking at it, i seached for Frederick's birth on LDS website:

FREDERICK CHARLES DAVIDSON
  Male
Birth:  31 JUL 1871   Elgin, Moray, Scotland
  Father:  ROBERT DAVIDSON
  Mother:  HELEN MACWILLIAM

this gave me his mother's maiden name, which enabled me to do a search for his parents marriage:

ROB. DAVIDSON
  Spouse:  HELEN MACWILLIAM
Marriage:  21 JUL 1869   Elgin, Moray, Scotland

you should be able to get a copy of these certificates and also the birth certs for Constance and Kate and scotlandspeople website. - it is a pay to view site, but is fairly reasonable at £6.00GBP for 30 page credits.

kind regards,
Lorna.

Go to www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk and you can download images of birth certificates 1855-1904, marriages 1855-1929 and deaths 1855-1954.
