Title: Knockhall, Killglass, Roscommon SHANAHAN
Post by: dnk1002 on Monday 15 March 10 18:12 GMT (UK)
I am looking for relatives that remain in Ireland/related to Catherine or Hugh.  Here is what I have.
Catherine McHugh b. 1847 married Hugh Shanahan b. 1841 County Roscommon, Barony Ballintober North, Parish Kilglass, Townland Knockhall. (1901 Census)  The children are as follows: (I believe they were all born in Ireland)
Anne Shanahan b. 1869 married Thomas Hanley b. 1868
Bridget (Bea) Shanahan b. 1875 married John Sheeran b. 1865
Owen Shanahan b. 1878 married Katherine Feeley b. 1887 (My great great grandfather)
John Shanahan b. 1875 married Mary (Polly) Rogers b. 1879
Mary Shanahan b. 1882 married Patrick Hoar b. 1883
Hugh Shanahan b. 1892 married Annie McGarry b. 1893
Elizabeth Shanahan b. 1886 married Thomas Washington b. 1885
Michael Shanahan b. 1891 (Died in Passaic, NJ USA)
James Shanahan b. 1887 married Annie Casey ?
As  far as I know, James is the only one that remained in Ireland and had two children, Michael and Mae (Mary?) married Gerald Gearty.  Any information would be so helpful.  Thank You.

At 1857 Griffith’s Valuation:
Two McHugh (Michael and Terrence).
Two Shanaghans (Hugh and Daniel)
occupied land in Knockhall townland, Kilglass Civil, Kilglass Catholic parish.
The LDS British Isles Vital Records set of 16 CD lists the Civil birth of
Anne Shanahan 1869,
Michael Shanahan 1871.
Both births registered in Roosky Registrar’s District.

Thank you Johnros.  I have been trying to find information on Anne but could not get a birth record.  I will also look into the 1857 Griffiths info you have.  I am also hoping to find some connections that lead me to find out if the family of James Shanahan still resides in that area.  Would love to visit there soon.  Thank you so much again.

Thanks Hallmark.  I am trying to find the connection for the McHugh family and there are just so many.  Hard to figure out which one is the family I am looking for.   Gave me lots of helpful clues!

My mother in law Bridget Naughton (now deceased) was born in Knockhall in 1924. She was best friends with Mae Shanahan, they both came to England in the forties or fifties. Bridie remained here and married then had 3 children whilst Mae eventually returned to Ireland. She married Gerry Gearty & had 2 children a boy and a girl. Mae is still alive, and living in the area, unsure of precise details.
Bridie's sister married John hanley, his father is Tom hanley, not sure if it's the same one you mention.
My husband knows the McHughs (terence was my mother in law's uncle) and the Hoars, they are also related to the Foleys......all of whom are still living in the Knockhall area although quite a few family members emigrated to Boston in early 1900s.
Many members of these families can be found buried at Kilglass cemetery......a beautiful old cemetery overlooking Kilglass lake.
hope this helps
Pauline :)

Wow, Pauline.  I am soooooo happy you replied.  I had no idea that Mae was still alive.  I am so excited and can't wait to tell my Mother all this information.  Thank you so much.  I will really need to get in touch with Mae.  My Grandfather Hugh Shanahan used to go to Ireland with his sister Katherine to visit with them but once Hugh and Katherine passed, no one was in touch with the family in Ireland.  Do you happen to know if Mae's brother Michael is still alive?  I believe he remained a batchelor and had a homestead in Roosky.  I also don't have any information on Gerald and Mae Gearty's children.
Thank you so much for this information.

Bobo91,
I would love to get in touch with Gerry.  If you can, please let him know that family in the States would love to speak with him.  I am trying to piece together our family tree and wonder if Mae would have more information, and especially pictures!!!  Let me know when you get a chance to speak with him.

Hi, I am very interested in this thread since my ancestors came from Roosky including my dad Michael Nevin, born 1913. See my thread trying to find Thomas Nevin’s ancestors.

My great grandfather Thomas Nevin married Ellen Shruhan or Shreehan b. around 1844 in 1859 in Roscommon. Her father was James. She had brothers and sisters. She died in 1909. No info on my great grandfather. Apparently the Shruhan or Shreehan lived on Lanesboro Road in Roscommon.

I also am related to Hanly’s on my grandmother Ellen Gilleran’s side. She married my grandfather Thomas Nevin born 1862 in 1909.

Wondering if there is any relation to the John Shreehan 1865 clan you mentioned.

Just curious. Thanks.
