Hello all, I've traced my Great Grandfather to the United States, perhaps into the state of California in 1942, but there are big gaps and if buts and maybes, please can i have advice on the types of American systems that are available especially marriage and Naturalisation documents.
many thanks Rik Morley

Hello Rik,
The California Marriage Records Index runs 1960 - 1985. The California Death Index 1940 - 1997. The census only go to 1930 in that state at the moment. Nothing is an exact science, it might be possible to find a Naturalization Document or a WW2 Enlistment, you never know.

California Death Index.
Birth Date: 14 Apr 1891 Born:- Other Country. Died 7 Feb 1959. Death Place: Butte. California. Father:- Morley
Coincidentally, there is a WW2 Draft issued in Butte. Califorina for a George Henry Morley 14 April 1890 (exactly a year different to the death record- number of times I've seen that happen is amazing) but he was born in Detroit.
If George had been in the US for sometime, it would not be unusual if he claimed to be born there but that would add to your ifs and maybe's !!

Hi dettori , Exciting news only this afternoon have i matched his signature on the WW2 draft document from his WW1 enlistment in England !
Now I need to find him on the census ! and his wife.
-
He's lying about his birth place, birth date, and year of birth !It should be 27th of April Parish of St Margarets Leicester England 1890
Detriot is where he crossed the border in the 1920's

So the only chance of finding him on a US Census is going to be 1930. Slight chance he could appear in California City Directories (think they cover the period after 1940) or California Voters Registration list (The latter covers 1900 - 1968)
Wondering if you could contact Butte County Library to see if an obituary would exist which may name his wife or whether they could do a look up for you. Found this site which looks like a volunteer look ups link:-

George was debarred from entering USA in April 1920. On that entry, he claims to be MARRIED, shoe maker, 29, father Wm Morley, in Lester, Lestershire (sic)
He was allowed entry in Mar 1924, age 33, shoe maker, SINGLE, going to Buffalo, NY. His contact info in Canada was Chas Harding, London, Ontario, Canada. (friend)
Do you know when he married, or where?

Hello Grub.
The anc.try tree says married in 1909 Leicestershire but his wife Clara died in Leicestershire in 1921.

Hi all Clara Hilda Morley nee Wood died in childbirth in 1921/22 in Leicester.
I've no idea who George Henry's new wife in the States is.
George Henry, stayed in the US, leaving four children who had to go into children's homes.
