I am looking for the origins of the Prater family. Thomas Prater, a coal miner was born in Merthyr in 1842. His father was James Prater from Bristol and his mother Sussanah Thomas from Saundersfoot.
Thomas married Mary Ann Parkes.
Any information would be very welcome
Peter.

I am not sure why the moderator pointed to your post in Glamorgan from Pembrokeshire when you are looking for details from Saundersfoot. C'est la vie.
There are 2 possible baptisms for Susanna Thomas in the St Issells baptism register from around 1814:
Parents: Joseph Thomas and Sarah (nee Child), 27/2/1814, parents' residence Saundersfoot, his occupation collier
William Thomas and Rachel (nee Gunter), residence, Stammers, 28/1/1816, St Issells, mariner
Saundersfoot at the time was just a few houses in a hamlet on the coast. Stammers is a couple of hundred yards inland. I have an idea that the second Susanna married in St Issells in 1841 to William James
There was one non-conf chapel in the area at the time and the baptism register survives. There is no likely "suspect" so the first Susanna above looks more likely for you.

Hi Jon
I know from experience that Rootschatters are keen and tend to cover everything about a family when responding to a request. Imagine how frustrated you would be to discover that the details you've just kindly supplied were also on two other boards! This way we avoid duplication and I have already PMed Peter to explain.

Kind regards, Arranroots ;)

his mother Sussanah Thomas from Saundersfoot.
Peter
There are at least 2 children that fit your requirements;
Susanna Thomas baptized 27 Feb 1814 to Joseph & Sarah Thomas or
Susanna Thomas baptized 28 Jan 1816 to William & Rachel Thomas
Both baptism took place at St Issells, the parish which covers Saundersfoot.
Joseph Thomas of Begelly married Sarah Childs at St Issells 24 Apr 1813
The only possible candidate that I can establish they may fit the 2nd Susanna is William Thomas who married Rachel Gunter at Tenby in 1808
I am aware of the Gunter surname being studied by a series of other researchers who may assist your own requirements.
Sarah Childs may well be related to the Oriel's of my interest as Henry & Alice Child nee' Oriel had lived next door in the parish of Amroth.

Jon and Orielbenfro,
Thank you so much for your information regarding Susanna Thomas's parents. This fits as James Prater who married Susanna was also a colliery worker.
Regards,
Peter.
