Title: Benjamin Trethewy EDDY 1824-1866
Post by: Guidingspirit on Friday 12 March 10 19:07 GMT (UK)
Hi everyone,
I am trying to trace the parents of my great great grandfather Benjamin Trethewy Eddy born in St Stephens Cornwall in 1824 and died in the Cholera outbreak in Brixham, Devon along with three of his infant children in 1866.
Benjamin was a tin miner in Roche, Cornwall before he moved to Brixham to work in the iron ore mines at Sharkham Point.
He married Jane Mathews born 1826 in St Austle in 1847. I have all Jane's ancestry stretching back to about the 1200's but Benjamin is proving to be a trifle elusive.
Any help would be most welcome. Jean.

Hi

Do you have a copy of the 1847 marriage cert which should show the name and occupation of Benjamin's father

Have you seen this submitted IGI entry which shows his surname as Eady

Submitted entries are notorious for being incorrect

Benjamin Trethewey Eady   Birth:  About 1825   Roche, Cornwall
Spouse:  Jane Eady    Marriage:  About 1848   Roche, Cornwall

This is a possibility as St Austell registration district covered Roche

1841 census for St Austell - all born Cornwall

Robert Eddy 45 labourer
Charity   50
Richard   24
John   20
Benjamin  16

Hi Jean,

This was a bit tricky given the variants.

Cornwall Census is Free Online

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,144624.0.html

As Carole has posted Benjamin is in St Austell with his family in 1841. By 1851 he is married and appears in both 1851 (Ladock) and 1861 (St Enoder) as EDY. (Birth listed as Cornwall in 1841, Ladock in 1851 and St Stephens in 1861) By 1851 mum and dad are in the workhouse in Truro. (EDDY)

I was having no luck at all with a baptism or a marriage for his parents though I found a likely birth for his mother

Charity TRETHEWY bap 6 Aug 1787 St Stephen in Brannel parents John TRETHEWY and Charity.

her parents

John TRETHEWY = Charity STRANGMAN 28 July 1784 St Stephen in Brannel

Well I eventually found that

Robert EWEDY = Charity TRETHEWY 20 Nov 1815 St Stephen in Brannel

fortunately that allowed me to find that

Benjamin EWDEY was baptised 11 Feb 1823 in St Stephen in Brannel parents Robert and Charity.

I note others baptisms as Ewdey first was Robert also in St Stephen 20 Dec 1815

Cheers Kris  :)

Looks like we are back with EDDY  ::)

Robert EDDY was baptised 23 Feb 1794 in Ladock (Ties in niecely with places listed in the censuses) parents Robert and Elizabeth.

Robert EDDY = Elizabeth SNELL 25 Sep 1788 Ladock

Cheers Kris  :)

Forgot to mention that the marriage of Benjamin and Jane does confirm his father as Robert

Be sure to check all our wonderful Cornish resources.

Many thanks for all this wonderful information, I am blown away by all the details. I thought that Robert and Charity Eddy were his parents but wasn't absolutely positive hence I didn't mention them but now you have confirmed it.
I have indeed sent for Benjamin and Jane's marriage certificate so, as you say, that should confirm Robert as being Benjamin's father. I have to say that this Roots Chat is an amazing find and it has given me such a lot of help in researching my family whereas before I was laboring in the dark.
Thank you both so, so much. Jean.

Hi Jeas,

Pleased you are enjoying the site. You will always find someone keen to try to assist. I was glad to help. I found it was an interesting one with the variants. Pleased to have found them for you.

The marriage certificate which confirms his father as Robert has been transcribed on the St Austell site I posted earlier and also to the Cornwall OPC database

Hello again,
I have entered all the information that you have so kindly given me into my family tree and it has opened up the floodgates, taking me back even further in my tree than I had ever imagined, so far I am back to the early 1600's and still more work to do - just having a breather!
The Trethewey family sure is popular in Cornwall and I am honored and privileged to find myself descended from them.
Thanks to your efforts my family tree has grown into a veritable orchard.
I can't thank you both enough. Regards, Jean. ;D

Hi there again,
Just to let you know that through Benjamin's wife Charity Trethewey I have now traced the family tree all the way back to the 1100's and the Plantagenet dynasty via Joan D'Acre Plantagenet 1272 - 1307, daughter of Edward Longshanks 1 King of England and Queen Eleanor of Castile. This makes King Edward and Queen Eleanor my 26 x Great Grandparents Wooooooo! This is a classic example of how Roots Chat can give that vital piece of information that opens the floodgates so thank you so very much again for your help.
The Eddy family however are proving to be a harder nut to crack and I am wondering whether it may be possible to find out any more about Robert Eddy and Elizabeth Snell who married on the 25 September 1788 in Ladock such as their birth dates and who their parents were or do the records not go back that far? I have had a look through the link that you gave me but have'nt so far been able to  find them probably because I don't really know where to look.
                        Regards, Jean.

I have been trying to PM you but it won't send - says something about reaching max limit or something which I don't understand as I kept the message short. Don't really want to advertise my e-mail address on here so don't really know how I can contact you - have you any suggestions?

Hi Nikki 67 I think I have solved the PM dilemma - apparently you have got to have made 3 postings on rootschat before you can use the PM system and as you have only made the one posting that is the reason I can't contact you. If you want you can make a couple of postings on here about what info you have and then we will be able to get in touch via the PM. Hope that is helpful - best I can do :( Kindest regards, Jean

That is really exciting - Benjamin's life is so interesting but also so very tragic. Hope you have been able to read my accounts on Ancestry as they really bring the family to life. Would you be able to let me know which of his children you are related to as I would be really interested to know how you fit in to the scheme of things - you can private message me if you would rather. I too was brought up in Brixham and still live here - it's a wonderful place with such a rich history. It is through Benjamin's mother Charity Trethewy that we can trace our family back to the crowned heads of Europe - have you got that far yet? Please let me know if I can help with anything,
Kindest regards, Jean

Hi Jean, I can't tell you how excited and pleased I am to be in touch. As a boy, I wasn't really interested in family history, but now with my parents and all close relatives having passed on, of course I realise how little I know.  A friend who is really into this with her family, helped me out the other day and by a miracle, very quickly, hit on your stuff on Ancestry, where she is a member.  I then did a google search on Benjamin and found your postings here, so I joined immediately. To give you an insight - in the article by Elizabeth Yolland nee Eddy (1852 -1907) on your Ancestry page, towards the end it says "(5) William the father of Walter Eddy and grandfather of Gladys Eddy (married William Foot) Phyllis (married Stanley Gorrell) and Nora (married Henry Lee King, who's only son went to the same school as my son, David)." I AM the only son of Norah and Harry King, mentioned and lived in Brixham until I was about 21 years old. My great grandfather was William Henry Eddy, grandfather was, Walter Elliott Eddy (on whom I have some interesting information). I am very happy to be in touch in whatever is the best format, as I say this is all new to me.  Look forward to hearing from you again. Kind regards Alan

Hello again Alan,
The article about my great grandmother Elizabeth Eddy was actually written by Edward James whose mother was Annie Yolland and I printed it as it was given to me by Edwards sister Nancy so I can't vouch for it's accuracy. I imagine that was how they remembered things. Did you by any chance go to school with a David James then or is that wrong? I too never bothered too much with family history when I was younger but since embarking on it I have found it amazing and it has certainly brought all my ancestors to life so to speak.
I am glad that you have been able to access my family history on Ancestry and hope that you have managed to piece together some of your family history from it.
Speak to you soon,
Jean.

Hi Jean, thanks for getting back to me.  To be honest, I can't really recall a David James (presumably at primary school) but it was a long time ago and it may well be correct. Would you mind telling me your surname?  I now live in Barnstaple, but lived with my parents in Penn Lane, when I was in Brixham. Kind regards, Alan

Hello Alan,
Yes it was a long time ago and it could have been that you were at the same school as David but just don't remember. I can't remember everyone I was at school with - just a few that were especially significant.
Regards, Jean.
