Title: Baptisms in Carnteel
Post by: Go Leafs Go on Tuesday 09 March 10 20:10 GMT (UK)
Hello,

My gr. gr. uncle Thomas John Davidson was born/baptised in Reskatirriff, Carnteel on 2 Apr 1860.
Thomas John Davidson was raised Protestant, Methodist. His father was a farmer.
I am 99.9% sure that Thomas Davidson and Sarah Hodge were his parents.

I do not know who to call or what church to call. I was told to contact the St. James Rectory 22 Carnteel rd, there are know records of any Davidson's.

I would appreciate any help.
Thank you

St. James' is Church of Ireland but perhaps someone suggested they might be buried in C. of I. churchyard? Not sure where local Methodist Church would be or what Circuit that area is in but perhaps someone else will be able to tell you.

A number of surviving Carnteel parish Methodist records are available on microfilm at PRONI. See their guide:

www.proni.gov.uk/guide_to_church_records.pdf

If you have Thomas John Davidson's 1860 birth/baptism record (as the exact date and place suggests), then you should know his parents' names, per that record, correct? Or maybe you only have his father's name on that record, and so are doubtful of the mother? If you don't have this actual baptism record and only found it cited somewhere else as a date & place, PRONI's microfilmed Methodist baptisms start in 1877 for Carnteel parish so won't have an 1860 baptism.

Non-established church denominations like Methodists often recorded vital events in the established Church of Ireland, too, so you should check that church in Carnteel parish, and it does include 1860 baptisms.

Methodist archivist Dr. Robin Roddie might be able to help you, and although he's not a commercial researcher, I'd send him a payment if I asked him to help with questions on Carnteel parish records:

Depending on how interested you are in finding out more on this family and where you live, you can do PRONI research yourself or you can have a professional researcher check those records for an hourly fee.

Good luck with your search,
Annie

Title: Re: Baptisms in Carnteel - parents married in Clonaneese Presbyt. church

Just checking on your query, I see that civil marriage record indexes show that Thomas DAVIDSON and Sally HODGE married March 15, 1854 at Clonaneese Upper Presbyterian Church, Killeeshil parish, Co. Tyrone. I'd suggest checking that church register (as well as in Carnteel parish) for anything on your DAVIDSON family. Keep in mind that the marriage location was usually the bride's church, as it is today, and after marriage the couple usually attended the husband's church. But a young woman might return to her parents and family church to have her first child or children baptised/christened.

Regards,
Annie
