Hello,it seems my great grandfather was a herd,would any know if this was an employed position,or a man working for himself.The area he worked was around Carlow Ireland.

The job title comes from a wedding cert.and it is listed as Herd only.

My great grandad from Wicklow has that on his marriage certificate too so I’d be interested to find out what the answer is! I’m thinking maybe it’s a person who herds livestock but not just one particular animal? It’s just a guess though.

'Herd' could be a shepherd (one who hers sheep), cattle herd (one who herd cattle) or someone looking after any animal.

A list of Victorian occupations compiled from 1891 England census says shepherd or looks after other animals.
Some of my English ag. lab. ancestors had the surname Hardman, a variant spelling was Herdman. Other ancestors from same region were called after lambs and cows and I also found a ewe.

Hi,The term does seem to refer to a stock man of some form , it seems it may refer to both some one who looks after livestock as a paid employee , but also as a person who looks after livestock as an independent land owner and live stock owner.
