My great grandfather was shown on his son's marriage certificate as being a plasterer (this was also the occupation of my grandfather) and that in 1908 was residing in Newcastle although earlier had been in Armidale.
While my grandfather used the name LINDALE we have been unable to trace any records of him or his father prior to 1908. We suspect he may have changed his name at some time so a list of Plasterers from c 1908 in Newcastle or from Armidae c 1881 may be a help.
Are there directories or records of a Plasterers Association from Newcastle c 1908 or Armidale c 1881.
Any help would be very much appreciated

There is no LINDALE or variation there of in the Federal Directory for Newcastle 1901. I also note that 'plasters' were often 'bricklayers'. htioi

Thanks for that. I have come to the conclusion that LINDALE was not his name. I have also searched for variations of it. That is why I wondered if there is a searchable list of Plasterers in either Newcastle c1908 or Armidale c1880. I am not sure when he moved to Newcastle. My grandfather who on two marriage certificates has given his place of birth as Armidale NSW. These marriages were 34 years apart. On his first certificate he has stated his mothers name as Alice NEWMAN and on his second marriage his mother is shown as Amelia SWANSON. His father on his first marriage cert is shown as Harry LINDALE and on his second as Nikolai LINDALE.
Our family is of the understanding that my grandfather, Albert Clarence LINDALE's father was of Scandinavian origin, probably Danish.
Harry or Nikolai could have moved from Armidale to Newcastle anywhere between 1881 to 1908. Indeed he could have been anywhere in Australia (or elsewhere) in the intervening years.
So the origins of my grandfather Albert Clarence LINDALE remain a mystery. The only clue to a differnt name (which has not lead anywhere) is the wedding announcement which appeared in the Wellington Evening post on 17 January 1908 (the day after his first marriage) where his name was spelt as LINDHAL.
Once again thanks

Have you tried the Newcastle Regional Library for information?

No I have not - do they have an on line service? I am based in Hamilton NZ so don't have any knowledge of what is available in Newcastle or Armidale.
Thanks for the suggestion. I will do a Google search.
