Title: IGI Records
Post by: hencarrai on Monday 08 March 10 22:22 GMT (UK)
Hi all,
can you help please?
I have found on IGI a submitted form for what could be my ancestors marriage.
I have Batch No. Sheet No. Source Call No.
Is it possible to find out who submitted the info?
The Message on the Record leads me to believe it can be done, but I have failed so far. Am I missing a trick here?
All help much appreciated,
Rob

I'm no expert on the IGI but if you give the names and date I'll have a look and see if I can work something out.

Probably of more relevance is the original Parish Register from which the record was taken. You could request a look-up on the appropriate board.

YES, it is possible - but it might take a bit of effort (and money to order microfilms).

Read the "Messages" field carefully.
Some I have found say "you may have to look at the film frame-by-frame to find the information you want" - suggesting one has to order the film (or films) and manually scroll frame by frame to try to find the matching record you found, since these films are not indexed (alas).
Sometimes it is mentioned that "Group Sheets" are available on film that would have the submitter's contact info.

Other records might have a "Submitters" field with a link, which will open to reveal the submitter's contact info (on the date it was submitted).

In my own research I have encountered similar IGI (probably submitted by people in the collateral lines), but I'll admit I had not yet ordered films personally to find the submitter.

I see someone else has answered already.

As an alternative to ordering microfilm you can visit your "local" Family History centre to view the film having determined your references ("local" being the operative word).
There is a facility on Familysearch under "Library" to find your nearest FH centre

Thanks folks,
Submitted Record is marriage of Thomas Jones to Sarah Davies, 24 May 1813, Newport, Mon. England.
I was hoping to be able to discuss the 'source' with the submitter and hoped I coud do that on line via the Batch No etc.
Best wishes
Rob

it's possible that the source is wishful thinking. I have a copy of transcribed marriages for that time and that one does not appear. Although there is one the next day for Thomas Morgan to Sarah Morgan at St Woolos.

You could get a copy of the parish entry from the record office

Thanks Osprey,
I have found Extracted Records for births / christenings of four children to Thomas Jones and Sarah; ranging from 1814 to 1824. These were all at Nebo Independent, Penmaen.
I was hoping that the Submitted Record of marriage would come up trumps.
I wondered what foundations the submitter had for his / her entry.
They wouldn't just conjure up something? or would they??
Best wishes,
Rob

if it fits their theory, yes they would. I've seen submitted records for my mother's uncle, aunt & cousin that are all out by over 20 years, so easily checked with bmds. Never rely on submitted records. They always must be verified from another source.

Ok, thanks Osprey,
I'll try to ignore the submitted record and keep digging.
I'm planning a visit to Records Office and FHC in the next couple of weeks.
I'll let you know how I get on.
Best regards,
Rob
