Would coroners reports still exist from 1845, and, if so, where would they be? My ancestor was killed by a railway carriage in Birkenhead and the coroner was the informant on the death cert.

You could check these indexings.

What was his name and year of death?
-
His name was Thomas Chamberlain and DoD was 24th April 1845.
Thanks

There does not appear to be any records that I can find prior to 1892.
You may wish to contact these people and ask them if the records for that date exist.

Diddy5, Birkenhead was in Cheshire in the period in which you are looking.
The main holder of Coroners Records is the Cheshire Archives and Local Studies, have a look at their catalogue on the following site:

Also it is worth trying the Wirral Archives their site is as follows:

Good Luck

Thanks Bilge and Kath for your replies.

Diddy 5 just another thought. Most Coroners inquests are reported in local newspapers. The Wirral Archives hold copies of many of the local newspapers.

Hi Kath,
Thanks for that. I contacted Wirral but they don't have anything relevant but suggested Chester RO. I have emailed them and am waiting for a reply.

There will be a report in a local paper. The Federation of Family History Societies produce a booklet listing all the local papers and the years they were published. I had a problem looking for an obituary in an area I had been brought up in but found the report in a completely different Newspaper to the one I would have expected.

Thanks for that Dot
I have had a reply from Cheshire RO and they also suggested newspapers so am going to pay them a visit.
