Title: Langwith Colliery, Derbyshire.
Post by: Dr.williams on Monday 08 March 10 11:23 GMT (UK)
My grandfather, Robert Arthur Cutts was killed at Langwith Colliery on 26th August 1925 - the Coroners Reports for that time no longer exist according to the Coroners Office.  Where would I find records of Langwith Colliery which closed around 1978.

Unfortunately he is not listed among the 55 miners at Langwith Colliery on the National Data Base of Mining Deaths at http://www.cmhrc.co.uk/site/home/

I think a newspaper report will be the way forward.
A report of the inquest would be I guess in either or both of the Mansfield and Chesterfield ( Derbyshire Times) newspapers.
Do you live locally? Mansfield library has the Mansfield Newspapers on film.

It might also be worth trying the Mansfield Chad.  Langwith falls between the two newspapers!

At last I have visited Mansfield Library and immediately found the report of my Grandfather, Robert Arthur Cutts' death, in the Mansfield Chronicle and Advertiser for the 3rd September 1925.  It is a full report headied 'Buried alive in the Pit - Second similar accident within a few weeks.'   There is also the report on the inquest and the verdict of accidental death.

Not sure if I can help for the time period concerned, but from researching earlier periods HM Inspector of Mines was responsible for enforcing safety in the pits and the annual reports make interesting reading. One ancestor of mine was HM Inspector for the Derbyshire area but in the 19th century; his reports are pretty scary in terms of the lack of care taken by owners and at times by miners, and the apparent unwillingness of magistrates to penalise offenders sufficiently, although he made a great point of the reduction in deaths and injuries year on year. Might be worth a look - the reports that I have seen have been at the National Archives in Kew.

Might be worth looking at newspapers for a few weeks or months after the inquest in case you can find a prosecution for unsafe working.

Welcome to rootschat, Thomas.

I think that the poster also has a copy of the death certificate as he quoted the cause of death from it.

Unfortunately he has not used this site since 2012, so may not receive notification of your reply if you wish to contact him about Robert, but if he has the same email address he may pop up on here.

Is there any help you want on anything else?

Added:
Robert Arthur Cutts is in almost 20 trees on Ancestry, so there will be others interested in him.
