A friend had John Leathem (son of George) married to Rachel Calvert in Clare and Ballydougan in the early 1800's. Daughter Bessie born about 1849 was said to marry an unknown Topping. Apparently this is not Martha and John Topping married 1847.
John Leathem had several sisters but also a brother of unknown name who married an unknown McKeown. The brother had son Joseph and another child who married an unknown Chambers. Joseph's children by an unknown wife include George who married Elizabeth Newell and went to the US via Canada.
Can anyone fill in the unknowns? Tullylish Church of Ireland seems to be the primary church with some Presbyterians mixed into the family. Topping, Chambers, and McKeown are local names but the marriages might be in other countries.
Bessie may be Eliza or ELizabeth or a middle name with an unknown first name. Leathem, Latham, Lathem , McCune, Topham, and Toppen may be alternative spellings. Anything close would be appreciated.

Hi,
If you google ROS DAVIES and look at the name Leathem I think there are some connections there.

My friend developed a good sized tree and it links with several other people's work. I very much appreciate those who have posted their trees. Sands, Turkington, Gamble, Gough, Cupples, Whiteside, Cull, Major, and Caddell are some of the surnames in his tree. RosDavies, familysearch, church and census records, gravestones, and Rootsweb have all helped fill in blanks, but not on these unknown folk. Rootschat is so well read, I am hoping someone recognizes the names.
I think one unknown could be James Chambers of Waringstown marrying ELizabeth McKeown in 1871, with Elizabeth probably born about 1852. Elizabeth is young enough on marriage that the timing might fit and her father's name on the marriage record might help. It looks like a stretch, though.
Macoun and McEwen are other variations of McKeown, but Thomas Henry Leathem's McEwan marriage is not the right one.

Hi KatC,
There is a few Leathems and Keowns in Raymonds' Co Down website under births, might be useful.

Hi KatC.
Could this be your Bessie ?. Your approx., birth date would make her around 40 years old.
William Topping married Elizabeth Leathem, on the 30 July 1889 in Lurgan Civil Registrar's Office, Co Armagh.

Dixie

Wow! THat sounds exactly right. There is a William who lived in Ballydougan, right place, had wife Elizabeth, right name, and she is about the right age. THanks so very much.
I have just spent the morning at Raymond;s site ad others, and came away with new information, but nothing on my unknowns. Thanks to both of you.

Hi...
If your looking for another Toppin/topham for the Ballydougan area, I have and Eliza/beth Topping marrying James Rice in Nov 1841, form Knockmuckley records. These Rices (My forefathers) were Ch of England/Ireland. Eliza & James sons (William & Robert) were sponsored to NSW, Aust. By 1857, on a church survey Eliza is ??? and James is listed as '(father) in America', sons split and living with uncles in Ballynagarrick.
Cheers

Thank you very much for that information. The Topham/Topping name seems to have been changing a bit right then.
