Hi all...
On the scrounge for help or suggestions.
I am researching the Docherty side of my family and I have now got stuck. I have sourced details on my Great Grandfather but cannot get further and don't know where to go next.
GGF: James Docherty. No DOB. Married Elizabeth Grahames on 1st July 1912, the died 9th Oct 1914 Nr Frelinghien, France (KIA).
I have got his parents names from the marriage certificate of Thomas Docherty (Occ: Puddler) and Mary Costella/Costello (the writing was a bit tough) and know she was marked as Deceased by the marriage of James above in 1912.
Have checked for Birth certs, Death certs, marriages and came up with zilch? Any suggestions on what I could try next?
I have James Dochertys army number etc, is it worth getting his army records, would they contain DOB, parental information? I know James lived at 10E Hutton ST, Coatbridge and Elizabeth was at 26 Lefroy St, Coatbridge according to there marriage certificate. I also know before enlisting James was a coal miner at the Rosehall Colliery

Hi stovie,
Think this is your Dochertys in 1891:
Address: Coatbank Street, 5 John Brown's Land, Coatbridge
Thomas Docherty, m, head, 39, furnacekeeper, b. Ireland
Mary Docherty, f, wife, 35, -, b. England
Mary Docherty, f, dau., 10, scholar, b. England
James Docherty, m, son, 5, scholar, b. Coatbridge
Thomas Docherty, m, boarder, 40, ironworker, b. Ireland
[note; There are marks over both Thomas Dochertys' ages, so very hard to make out.]
Mary Docherty (m.s. Costello) died 10th December 1894 in Coatbridge, aged 38. She was the daughter of James Costello, puddler (deceased) and Bridget Costello m.s. Keenan (deceased).
A re-marriage for Thomas between then and 1901. Certificate should be available to view on SP and will give parents' names.
Address: 93b Buchanan St, Coatbridge
Thomas Docherty, m, head, 49, iron puddler, b. Ireland
Jane Docherty, f, wife, 38, -, b. Coatbridge
James Docherty, m, son, 15, pithead worker, b. Coatbridge
Sarah Jane Keegans, f, niece, 12, scholar, b. Motherwell
Michael McLean, m, boarder, 40, coal hewer, b. Coatbridge
Hope this helps. :)

Hume, thanks very much for this...over the moon. Does look like a good possible connection. So very much appreciated.
Stovie.
New to this game so getting to grips with making connections and searching the right stuff.

Hi Hume,
Can I ask what resources you were using, don't know how I missed this. I did see the James Docherty in South Shields but missed all the census stuff completly.
Didn't know how to confirm the south shileds link?

Hi Stovie and Hume :)
Just adding to all the good info found and confirmed by Hume. This looks a possible entry for the Dochertys in 1881:
Thomas Docherty 28, iron worker b. Ireland
Mary Docherty 24 b. No Shields, Northumberland
Mary Docherty, 5 months (I think from the original) b. Gateshead, Durham
Address: 3 Amberley St, Gateshead, Durham
RG11; Piece: 5032; Folio: 55; Page: 40

Can't see any service papers unfortunately on Ancestry's database but these look to be his death details:
James Docherty, birth and place of residence: Coatbridge, died on 19 OCT 1914. A private in the
Seaforth Highlanders (Ross-shire Buffs, the Duke of Albany's), 2nd Battalion - No. 8139.
Can't see any further details for him on www.cwgc.org

Hi Stovie and Monica,
Monica has found a great 1881 census entry, which I think confirms the marriage etc to be the correct family.
I first looked for a death for James' mum, Mary. Scottish females are indexed under both maiden and married names (if known) and therefore are a lot easier to find on the SP index. Once I had that, I went to the 1891 census and worked forward.
I used SP (for the certificate and original images) but the Ancestry index for finding the census. It's a lot better than the SP index in quite a few respects (you are able to add parents' names, birthplace etc). Unfortunately the transcription isn't as good so it's a case of working between the two.

Also should have said the marriage came from FreeBMD: http://www.freebmd.org.uk/

The military details found by Monica can be confirmed here: (Scottish National War Memorial)

He is also listed on Coatbridge Civic War Memorial, see: (Scottish War Memorials Project)

Hi Ann
Just picking up the cue from one of the sites you posted http://www.snwm.org/ regarding checking for wills at the National Archives of Scotland (through their on line search service www.nas.gov.uk/onlineCatalogue/) and there is one entry there for James Docherty.
Not sure if you have this already Stovie, but the details show as:
Ref: SC70/8/31/12 - Will of 8139 or 9139 Private James Docherty, 2nd Bn., Seaforth Highlanders, Cause of death: Killed in action, Frelinghiem, Theatre: France and Flanders, 19 Oct 1914

On a slight tangent ......
There is also a John Grahames listed on Coatbridge Civic Memorial (possibly a relation of Elizabeth?) and this same John is possibly listed on Stewart & Lloyd's (Coatbridge) Memorial, see:
http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=7&mforum=warmemscot
If you are interested in following up any Grahames - this John is listed on a family gravestone in Old Monkland Cemetery. He was the son of Joseph and Mary Ann Grahames of Coatbridge. (7th Bn. Royal Scots Fusiliers, Service No. 16224, died/killed 26th September 1915) His brother James was killed in WW2.

Guys,
Can't thank you all enough.
Monica, I had managed to get the service history as I have James war medals so the details you added are correct (correct service number). I guess I am still trying to get to grips with searching as now trying to find the items you have already mentioned, so I can work out the best way to do this. Also got some (although few details) from a book called Coatbridge and the great War, which had all or most coatbridge men from the war.
May look into the Grahames stuff, have primarily been focusing on amguires, from my dads side (now stuck since tracing to Ireland) and Dicherty/Murray on my mums side, which you have all helped with.
Thanks again all... appreciated.

Hi ,
I stumbled across this post while researching Edward Grahames from Coatbridge , another son of Mary- Ann and Joseph Grahames. His sister Bridget was married to a Docherty ( found on Scotland's People )
Edward lived until 1976. I wondered if he was in the Seaforth Highlanders ?
