Title: Tasmania McCORMACK
Post by: gelin5 on Sunday 07 March 10 21:09 GMT (UK)
I'm looking for more information on Michael McCormack, born around 1808 (place unknown), died in Deloraine, Tasmania in 1864. He was a well-known pioneer in early Deloraine (also called Alveston in the early days), running the first postal service there, a shop and a pub. He was there from at least 1843, possibly earlier. I don't know where he came from or who he married. I know he only had one son, Michael Ambrose McCormack but I don't know if he had any daughters. Both father and son Michael are mentioned in some history books about early Tasmania.

There were several other McCormacks in nearby Westbury in the early 1800's (and possibly also in Deloraine) but I haven't been able to connect any of them with my Michael.

There was a mention in a newspaper article written many years after Michael sr. died that he had "come from South Australia" but that might have just been referring to the route that his ship took, not his origin.

Any leads would be appreciated.

Have you had a look at this marriage

There are no births registered to this couple.  Have you searched any of the parish records at Deloraine?

and the article from which you have taken your information.

I can see no immigration records in South Australia for Michael McCORMACK - the first McCORMACK immigration record is in 1845.

Marriage of Michael Ambrose to Jane Joyce 5 Nov 1875 has witnesses Daniel Griffin and E H J McCormack (which would seem to be close relative of adult age) . Michael spent a few years in Victoria as a teacher on the goldfields and applied for a teaching position on return to Tasmania.

ED2/1/275 3404  #404 film roll Z305  - A while since I saw the file, and his birth place was not the purpose of my enquiry, but I have a feeling  that Michael Ambrose was born in Ireland. Anyway, I will locate it and let you know what birthplace is indicated.

From the education department application Michael Ambrose McC 18 Oct 1873, he is 30yo at last birthday, native place Ireland, 23 years in the colonies, just returned from 7 years in Victoria, farming and surveying. Among referees are the parish priest at Westbury James Hogan who has known Michael for twenty years. This man is the first priest at Westbury, arriving in 1850, and staying in the same parish until he died. That would seem to mean that Michael's family arrived in Deloraine area in 1853.

Another McCormack/Cormick marriage in the area is Bridget Helena m. Michael Keon 30 Nov 1865, both 22 yrs. They have a few children, then move to Victoria. Bridget Helena Keon d. 1912 Prahran, 67yrs, parents Michael Ambrose McCormack and Joanna Lunden.
In Tasmania born to Michael McC and Joanna Landon/Lundon are female 28 Jun 1850, female b. 29 Aug 1848 both at Westbury.
Margaret McCormack d. 21 Dec 1855 is probably the older girl.
Joanna McCormack d. 28 Dec 1866, 64 yrs Launceston
Michael McCormack d, 6 Oct 1964, 56th yr Deloraine

Thank you, both Cando and Wivenhoe, for your hard work. I have indeed picked up a few leads from what you have supplied. Wivenhoe, your specific information from Michael Ambrose McCormack's teacher application was a particular breakthrough. I had forgotten about that teaching position application.

Michael Ambrose McCormick was born about 1813 in Limerick (I think the city), Ireland. He married Johanna Lunden in her village of Bruff, Limerick. Children Michael 1835 Limerick, Thomas 1837, Elizabeth 1838, Ann abt 1839, Bridget Helena 1840 Bruff. I assume Thomas and Elizabeth died, as they were not on board when they then emigrated to New Zealand (Nelson) on the Bombay in 1842, during which a son was born and died. They left for Australia, can't find when, but I think it had something to do with the Maori uprisings. There is an Andrew born in NSW in 1843, haven't confirmed if same family, but same parents' names. I believe they had 2 daughters in Tasmania, 1848 and 1850.  I am descended through Bridget Helena, who did indeed marry Michael Tobyn Keon in 1865.

FitzMurray is also currently making enquiries on Beginners.

It is best to link the two lines of enquiry to save people the trouble of  searching for what has already been found by other helpers.
