I am trying to trace information on the Given family of Limavady. My Gt Gt Grandmother was Ann Jane Given born Limavady born c. 1830. She was apparently disowned by her wealthy family when she eloped and married their gardener. I know there was gentry by the name of Given in Farloe.

Welcome to Rootschat. You haven't mentioned the groom's name but an Ann Jane Given m.1853 (Newtown Limavady registration district) Co.Derry to William James Waugh.
Ann Jane's marriage (whether or not this one) should list her residence and her father's name and occupation.

Hi Aghadowey (my husband is from aghadowey!)
Sorry for lack of info there - This Ann Jane Given married a James Canning in Longtower, Derry. She converted from Church of Ireland I believe. I also know where she is buried but on the cemetery records her parents are not listed probably because she was disowned. What i really want to know is her life before she got married. If she was born 1830 I suppose I need to knock on some Limavady church doors to look at their records?

Also no information given on marriage record either.

Hi,
One of my sources lists a marriage of James Canning to Ann GIRTON on Long Tower Chiurch in Lobdonderry on 6 Dec 1846. I wonder if it is a misprint. I have also found a daughter , Catherine, born 3 Nov 1870 to James Canning and Ann Jane Given.
I also have a brief description of an early Given Family in Limavady but most of them appear to have emigrated.
Regards

Hi Kingskerswell - many thanks for replying.
Yes Catherine is one of their children and also my Gt grandmother. The marriage you refer to is transcribed as GIRTEN but I believe this has been transcribed incorrectly. There is an adult baptism on the previous day 5th dec 1846 also in Longtower of an Ann Given. I am assuming this is her converting to catholisism before she got married? - do you think?
The directories give a Wm Given as a high constable of the Barony of Farloe/Farlow. I have found a record of an Ann Given born Limavady with the parents as John Given and Mary Walker but not sure if this is her parents or not!
Just trying to piece all this together! Any information from anyone would be great.

there are 3 births on IGI for children of James Canning and Anne Jane Given
there are also births for an Anne, William and John Given to parents John Given and Mary Walker
but they are submitted entries and therefore could be wrong info
through experience of researching the Given name in Ireland it is very difficult to find anything before registration years
I found some in the 1831 census for Dunboe that could possibly be mine as I have info that they came from that area the name Given is often transcribed wrongly
these are some that I have found Givan Govan Giffen Gibbon Gavin and Garvan
my Given's came to Scotland just before 1841
if I find anything amongst the stuff I have collected I will let you know

Hi,
I have a John Dawson Given marrying Ann Bell Walker in Magilligan Church of Ireland on 14 Aug 1845. The early Given information I have is from a book so If you want it I will send it using the PM system The information is available in a PRONI document T2809 and in a report in the Derry Standard of 20 Jan 1864.

So Ann Given married James Canning in 1846 and had a daughter born 24 years later [Catherine in 1870], which suggests she was very young when she married.
If she was related to the Farloe family then her birth might be recorded in the Ballykelly registers but it is going to be very hard to prove because neither her marriage or death record indicates the name of her father.

I meant to say the Ballykelly Presbyterian registers.

Kingskerswell please do send info via PM I would very much appreciate that.
Elaine447 - thank you for the Given IGI info - I hadn't found that yet.
Gortinanima - Catherine was the last of their children, their first born was in 1850. If the information I have so far is correct then she married at 16!?
Thank you everyone for submitting info!

I'm looking for Martha Ferguson Given born about 1820 of Limavady Londonderry. Came to Australia 1842 and married John Robertson. He was from Co Tyrone.
-
Mildmay,
The IGI lists a submitted entry showing Martha Given born 1822 in Limavady. Parents were Robert Given and Martha McFetters. As it was a submitted entry it should be treated with some caution.

Martha Ferguson Given was the daughter of John Given (1788-1852) and Martha Ferguson (born c 1795). She married John Robertson (of Ballyclog Parish, near Dungannon, County Tyrone) on 16 May 1842 at Christchurch, St Laurence, Sydney.
