Hello friends,
I am delighted to find this lively forum as
my current research interest concerns the pre 1900
occupants at The Old Corn Mill, Spittal, near Solva.
Can anyone help with this?
Also hope to find where the Spittal village school records
are archived. The family of the farmer is believed to
be BATEMAN.
Many thanks, I hope to hear from you

I have searched the O.S. map for the area around Solva and can find no reference to “Spittal Mill”, so I suspect the Mill of your interest is some way from the village and situated in the parish of Spittal, N.E. of Haverfordwest.
This would appear to be confirmed by the non appearance of the Bateman surname in Whitchurch/St David’s Parish around the time of your interest, but the name does occur during the 19th century at Ambleston Parish which is adjacent and north of Spittal Parish.
For your interest the Mill at Spittal still exists and is I believe a private home.
From my own research a probable ancestor in 1624 is noted quote “a mill called Spitle Mill in the occupation of William Oriel of Haverfordwest Sherman”. William at this time was an innocent party caught in the middle of a court case of none payment of rent for the Mill and half a messuage to the tune of £50 between John Tanke and Thomas Adams.
I have emailed an acquaintance of mine who may well have far more info on Mills of Pembs, so if anything further is forthcoming I shall pass on your details to him.

Hello Orielbenfro
many thanks for your quick response - much appreciated and
would of course be happy to hear from your contact.
Meantime I have managed to dip into Census 1911
Enumeration District 22 RG14 33259 Reg District Haverfordwest
parish of Spittal and made a big hit.
James Elliot BATEMAN 28 yrs Farmer, Corn Miller, Traction Owner b.1883
(that's great) together with his wife Clara Ann b 1883 and family.
The records from the Village School would be a bonus.
thank you again for your interest.

I wonder if the traction engine James owned was built in the Engineering works of Eastback Pembroke ??
Since they married in 1902 and both born in 3rd Qtr 1882 do I presume they were both chapel and it is the post 1902 school records you seek.
A quick email to the Record Office will tell you what if any skool records for Spittal are avilable, they will only search the records for 15ukp per hour see ;

Hello,
Now fully focussed on the parish details and the
correct location.
The reference to Solva was my mistake. It has been
confirmed that members of the family concerned
had been resident there.
Many thanks for the link to vital records.

I had a look at School Records catalogue today at the Record Office, I would suggest that all information you will require plus a bit extra may well be available to you at the Record Office for Spittal School. Of course I do not know the exact details you seek but from the catalogue am reasonable confident the periods you want are there.

Historical Directories has a couple of references to a Spittal Mill for Pemb's -
Kelly's Directory Monmouthshire + S Wales 1895 Pt2 "Davies, Lewis, Spittal Mill, Spittal, Treffgarne R.S.O Pembs" (I think RSO refers to a railway stop?)
Kelly's Directory Monmouthshire + S Wales Pt 1 1895 "Davies, Lewis, Spittal Mill, Steynton"
Slater's Directory of N + S Wales 1880 Pt 1 "Llewellyn, Thomas, Spittal Mill, Haverfordwest".
Worrall's Directory of S Wales 1875 "Llewellin, Thomas, Spittal Mill, Haverfordwest"

Re Spittal Mill & the Bateman family Clara Ann Evans was my great grandmother my Grandmother Amelia May Bateman born 1907 lived at the mill with her parents and two brothers. I have a partial family tree for the Batemans going back to 1760's if you need further info

Hello AmeliandElsie,
many thanks for your message, it is most welcome.
Our Bateman Family research is ongoing and therefore it would be kind of you to add to the history.
In 1940+ Alan D Kirkby as a small boy had been evacuated from S E London and placed in the care of the Bateman's at the Mill. He was looked after on a day to day basis by their daughter Margaret (Maggie). He returned to his family home after the end of WW2 1945.
He had attended Spittal village school.
His siblings, sister Olive and brother Edwin David) were also billeted with local families. Their mother, Alice Kirkby had worked at the Royal Naval Depot, Trecwn, nr Fishguard.
I shall look forward to your reply.

Hi I'm sorry but I'm not sure I'm much help. Are you sure he was looked after by Batemans? My grandmothers mother Clara died 1912 after being thrown from a carriage whilst pregnant. Elliot then married the housemaid Elsie. My grandmother married in 1924 & moved to farm in Doleron farm Clarbeston. Her father & Elsie together with my grandmothers youngest brother Colwyn emigrated to Canada 1926 & remained in Canada. My grandmother went to Canada for a few years but returned to Clarbeston my father was the youngest of her 12 children. I'm not sure what happened to Spittal mill after Elliot & Elsie went to Canada. I will contact my Aunty & ask if she knows.

Hello
Thank you for your reply. Additions from your Aunt would be appreciated.
The Census for 1911 (RG14 PN33259 ) Spittal Mill shows all the family.
We have made a visit Spittal village and to The Mill, and quite positive it is the home.
The current owners knew the family and
made us most welcome.

Hi, I spoke with my Aunty, she said Maggie was the daughter of Willie Bateman whom was Elliot's brother. Apparently she was a tad eccentric remained a spinster but used drive a large motorbike & side car! Sadly she passed away sometime in the early seventies after contracting pneumonia. She had a brother who did marry & moved possibly to the Milford Haven area, I don't have any details of him. My Aunty Bronwyn was quite close to Maggie but sadly she passed away a couple of years ago. Willie did farm at the Croft but must of taken on Spittal Mill, as prior to my great grandfather emigrating to Canada he took the lease of the Noltons farm Spittal (now ruinous) this was where Clara was raised by her aunt Martha Jenkins. I'm sorry I have not been of much assistance, my knowledge of Batemans prior to this time.

Hi, that's splendid news with many significant additions for us. Most grateful to and your Aunty for the help received. The present owner of the Mill has been working away to restore to full eorking order the heavy engineering.
We were sad that life was hard going for the family. He was able to tell us that Maggie was buried at Zion's Hill chapel/cemetery. Her brother was possibly David/Glynn, I will try to check this and let you know.
The farming and daily life for the early settlers in Canada must have needed considerable guts and determination.
The original School on the vilage green at Spittal has been sold and refurbished and a available as a self catering accommodation.

I realize that this is a very late reply to the original post but I am wondering if anyone can give me directions to where Spittal Mill is located? We will be going to Wales in September and my 3rd great grandmother showed her abode as Spittal Mill on her 1848 marriage record. I have tried Google Maps and haven't been able to locate it. Thank you for any assistance.

Welcome to Rootschat!
1851 census shows Spittal Mill with William Lewis as miller.

The 2 previous addresses are Golden Hill and the one before that Bridge End Inn and the one after the mill is Penrhiw. So here

Hello searchers,
The postcode found for Spittal Mill is SA62 4BB.
The KING family when we visited were undertaking
a major restoration project.
During WW2 William BATEMAN miller/farmer and Maggie
daughter were residents.
A group children from South East London evacuees
were placed for duration 1939-1945. Bateman’s
hosted one of the young boys who attended school in the village.
Be pleased to hear from you
