Title: Great Grandad's Fading Fast
Post by: Marengo on Friday 05 March 10 07:12 GMT (UK)
Hi Guys -
This is the only known photo of my great grandfather. (1910)
I'd greatly appreciate anyone's effort to revive him before he fades away forever.
If possible, I'd also appreciate a cropped pic of just the old boy.
Thanks, in anticipation.

Thanks very much Joy and Lones.
You're certainly quick off the mark.
I just wish the technology was there to give himm a 'virtual shave' - then I could see if inherited anything else besides the nose.
 Much appreciated. Thanks again.

Thanks for the 'thanks' Ed, it was a pleasure. He had a lovely face and I bet his
eyes twinkled.

You might be better off not knowing  ;)

You're very welcome.  I will try to do the whole thing if time permits, who are the children?  Do you know?

Thanks for the interest, Lones.
Yes, I do know the children.
They are two of his grandaughters;
Myra (age one) and Audrey (4 months) - cousins to my father.
Myra died in 2002, aged 92.
Great-grandad was a 'late starter' - he was born in Sheffield, Uk in 1825 and didn't marry (in NZ) until 1866, age 41. He was sixty when his last child was born - the mother of the older baby in the photo.
He died one year after this photo was taken, age 86. (He would've probably lived a little longer if he hadn't been hooked on his own medicine).

Thanks Xin -

He was well gone long before my time and this is the only photo of him that is known (by myself) to exist.
So - I'm in no position to judge the accuracy of your 'reconstruction'.
(I was being mildly frivolous with the shaving idea. I realise it could only ever be a guess.)
Nevertheless, thanks for guessing!

Wow!

I don't know if he looked like this either - but I rather hope he did! (He looks so much healthier!)
I thought it was asking a bit much to mention 'colour' in the prescription but what you have done here is most impressive.
Your b&w version is just great too.
Thanks Saddles.

Irene -

Thankyou for your labours on my behalf.
It would appear that resurrecting the children is actually more difficult than the Grandpa Henry.
I'm not overly concerned with the aspect of the children - it was more the preservation of the only image of Henry.

Many thanks,

Ed

And a black n white if you prefer.

And again pig tail removed.

First a shave and then a haircut.
The tonsorial primping looks just great.
Hirsutedly Yours -

Hi ..  I am bumping ths back to the top as I have just heard from Marengo via email that he never saw this latter part of this thread and has only just found my pm relating to Amperite's post ... Can't send pms to Amperirte yet as he has only one post to his name ( 2 or 3 are required before Pms are possible ) Maybe this will trigger an email to Amperite  and a link to get him back here  as it appears he may have info for Ed ... Sorry Ed That's all I can do  :'(

Thanks Poll
I went into winter hibernation and I appear to have missed the last few postings on this thread, particularly the one by Amperite.
Thanks to anyone I missed thanking through not being around at the time.
I'm rather hoping that Amperite spots this posting as I am most intrigued as to how he/she would know that there was a connection to the Odling family. There is of course;  Mary Odling (nee Mary Eyre) was the eldest child of the 'restored' couple above. (The babies pictured are her nieces).
I may have mentioned the Odling name somewhere else and maybe it has merely  turned up in here with Poll's reply - being a troglodyte I'm often confused if I'm given a choice of buttons to push.
If Amperite gets to see this, please PM me.
Thanks

Hello.

I hope that you have received my PM. I know some time has passed, but hopefully I can still help you with some information about the Odling family.

Considering that I posted the original photograph a little over two years ago, I wasn't really anticipating any further restorations.
However, I have to say that I really appreciate your sepia contribution, Morris and it will definitely be included in the Great- Grandad portfolio.
So, once again, thankyou.
