I cannot find my great granddad on the 1871 or 1861 census at all, I have had help from Rootschat but he still cannot be found, it has been suggested to me that perhaps he went abroad and came back to the UK (he is on the 1881 census and onwards).
Can anyone tell me please whether online or not as to how I can check passenger lists, remembering if he did leave the UK I don't know where he could of gone to!
Many thanks for any leads.

Best to post full details of his name and DOB and place of birth.
Then I'm sure we will all check our respective countries ;)

Ancestry.com has UK Incoming Passenger Lists, 1878-1960; so if he was back for the 1881 census you might get lucky?

Thank you Annie and Mort29 for your replies. My great granddad was married in 1876 so unfortunately that would rule out the Ancestry site.
This 'oh so' individual was/is: William Henry Cox born about 1833 ish Birmingham or Sheffield.
Thank you again for any help or advice.

Where was he born please, there are a couple of possibles to Australia.

On 2 censuses it says he was from Birmingham (also his marriage certificate and licence) but on an orbituary from the Isle of Man it says from Sheffield. I would go for Birmingham though because as he was dead for the orbituary it was not information from him. ::)
