Looking for info on the Harkin family of Inver Co. Donegal, they appear to be one of the very few 'Church of Ireland' Harkin families in Donegal and I believe their Church was Inver COI
Information I have to date:
My GG Grandparents:
Thomas Harkin c1831 - bef 1911 married to Rebecca Colwell/Caldwell c1837 - 1914
Children I know of:
Thomas Harkin (my G Grandfather) 1860-1906 married to Margaret Dunlop c1850 - c1930
(married Leckpatrick COI Tyrone 1883) had 6 children, 4 survived (James Andrew, Thomas Johnston, Edith & Hugh), Thomas emigrated to New York with the intention of bringing the family over at a later date but died before he could do so.
Ellen Harkin c1869 - 1900 emigrated to New York and married Hugh Nesbitt c1871 - 1899, no known children
John Harkin 1873 - aft 1911 married Mary Jane Coulter c1883 - 1953, stayed in Inver area, had at least 2 children, John & Annie
Andrew Harkin 1876 - 1907 emigrated to New York and married Lizzie ? , had one child also called Lizzie.
I have visited Inver COI Graveyard and could only find one Harkin Headstone:
In Loving Memory of
MARY JANE HARKIN died Feb 1953
ANNIE FREEBORN died Sept 1959
TOM FREEBORN died Oct 1973
JOHN HARKIN died Jul 1982
I believe this could possibly be John’s Wife, Children & Son in Law.
Any more info on this family would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks everyone!
Must apply for a copy of that marriage certificate at least it will give me a clue with the fathers names.
One thing that's puzzling me, My G Granfather Thomas Harkin was a butler and went to New York in 1903 and died there in 1906 (I got a copy of his death cert confirming his parents names as (Thomas Harkin and Rebecca Caldwell), he is buried with an Ellen and Hugh Nesbitt, New york marriage records show the marriage of Hugh Nesbitt and Ellen Harkin on 11th March 1896 (Hugh then died in 1899 followed by Ellen in 1900), I guess this Ellen could have been a sister of Thomas (Birth records above show an Ellen being born to the same parents), but on Thomas's emmigration record it is showing he was going to stay with a brother called Andrew Harkin but there doesn't seem to be any record of an Andrew born to the same parents, Any Ideas?
P.S. I have found the following for Andrew: an emmigration record in 1896, 1900 US census record (Showing him married to Lizzie with a Daughter Lizzie), Naturalization record in 1903 and death record in 1907, but no birth record, his age on the above documents would have him born around 1876 (I haven't applied for his death cert as he is not in my direct line but I suppose this would confirm his parents names)
-
When you say "brother called Andrew Harkin but there doesn't seem to be any record of an Andrew born to the same parents" do you mean that Andrew's birth isn't listed in IGI? if so, IGI has some, but not all Irish births, 1864 (start of registration) to c1882.

Found a few more bits of information which I'll post in case you don't have them.
1900 U.S. Census- Wyckoff Ave., Queens, N.Y.:
Andrew Harkin, born Nov.1876 Ireland, to US 1896 (occupation hard to read- hose ? )
wife Lizzie Harkin, born July 1878 Ireland, to US 1897, married 6 years
daughter Lizzie Harkin born Feb.1896 New York
See http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#c=1325221;p=collectionDetails
25 Sept.1908 arrived N.Y. from Liverpool, England
Lizzie Harkin, age 17, born Drumkeerin Ireland, father Thomas Harkin of Lisgaveneen Drumkeerin, to brother James Harkin of 66 Myrtle Ave. Brooklyn N.Y.
See www.ellisidland.org to view both pages of manifest with full details
Note: See my reply below re: 1900 census
-
Hi Aghadowey Yes that's the correct Andrew Harkin in the 1900 Census, his occupation was Horse Shoer (from Naturalization records) it states he arrived in 1896 and was married 6 yrs which would indicate he was married in Ireland but when you look at the actual census image its clearly looks like 1 yr therefore married in New York (although haven't found a record of the marriage on the italiangen.org site), this ties in with the fact that his mother in law was living with them and she had been in New York 52 yrs.
The Address (Wyckoff Ave) is also the same address given in Thomas's emigration record and the Naturalization record.
I suppose its quite possible his birth record is just missing from IGI, I believe Letterkenny Library has the Inver Parish records on Microfilm, when I get a chance I must trawl those.
Thanks for your help!

Had another, more careful look at 1900 census- says daughter Lizzie born Feb.1890 (not 1896 as I mis-typed in my earlier post) but was aged 3 months (3/12) so perhaps birth should have been Feb.1900!
For number of years married looked like it was perhaps '1' changed to '2' or visa versa.
I also wondered if marriage took place in Ireland but couldn't see it in civil index under Andrew's name. If they did marry in Ireland I would expect to find them going to N.Y. (together?) afterwards.
N.Y.C. births are on Italian Genealogy website (don't be fooled by the name- lots of NYC records there) but at the moment only 1901-1907 is covered although keep checking as more being added.
However, a search for 'Harkin' births in Queens (remember 1900 address) shows Rebecca Harkin born 10 April 1903!
Have you thought of searching for Andrew's widow Lizzie and children in later census records?

Got a copy of the Marriage certificate:
Thomas Harkin - Full Age - Bachelor - Servant - Magherybeg, Parish of Donegal Father: Andrew Harkin - Farmer
& Rebecca Caldwell - 23Yrs - Spinster - Dunkineely, Parish of Killaghtee, Father: Alexander Caldwell - Farmer
on 27th Aug 1859 at the Registrars office in the town of Donegal
Witnesses: William Scott & Jane Underwood
That gives me a couple of more leads with the fathers names!
I understood 'Full Age' to be over 21, if this is the case why is Rebecca's actual age listed as 23Years but not Thomas' actual age?

Hi Aghadowey, that's a good lead, there's a good chance they had another daughter called Rebecca as this was Andrews mothers name, Have checked later census records with no joy, unless Lizzie remarried and changed the surname of their Children?

Only just seen you posting from 2010 .....
I don't know of any connection to the Harkin family, however, there is a list of names below, and I do have connections to:

My Great Grandfather was Patrick Porter, who married Catherine Craynor from Carnamoyle. They lived in Kilderry and had a son, James and daughter Rebecca.

Hi RebeccaB, I believe that is the same Porter connection! Patrick and Catherine's son James is my Great Grandfather, I think as soon as you make 3 posts you can send/receive PM's so hopefully you can get in touch and we can compare notes :)
Hi derrylass and Aghadowey thanks for the additional information, it's been a while since I've looked at my tree but these are new leads and will most likely spark my interest again :)
-
Hi Muffin74,
I am not sure what "PM"s are, but if I keep posting messages, I am sure I will find out :-)
The James Porter (son of Patrick & Catherine) in my tree was married to Isabella Sweeney, and their childrens names were Patrick, Marion, William, James, John and Bridget.
Does that ring any bells?
Regards,
Noeleen
-
Yes Bridget was my Grandmother :) how are you connected?
-
Oops just noticed your name on your reply and think I've realised who you are :)
-
I think I know who you are too.when I saw all the names below the post I thought it might have been a new lead .regards Noeleen

Already posted in reply #12 last March.
Think this Rebecca is the one in 1910 census with mother Isabella Harkins.

Reply 17 by Aghadowey mention the Harkins family. One of the children was Ethel Harkins - born 1900 NY.

Rebecca & Isabelle appear to be mistranscribed as Hawkins in the 1920 Census - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MVMM-PCP
They appear to be at 25 Winifred Street, so that seems to match the information found above.

Hi, there is a Harkin headstone at the old Inver graveyard:
"In Memory of
John Harkin
Who died 15 Jun 1888 aged 63 years
Also his Son Thomas
Who died 20 Feb 1883 aged 15 years
Also Mary Harkin
The Dearly Beloved Wife of Hugh Harkin
Who died 21 Nov 1922 aged 67 years
Erected by Hugh Harkin"
http://donegalgenealogy.com/oldinverGY.htm
My own family are the Kirks and McJunkins/McJenkins/Jenkins headstones. There is a Corscadden headstone - ex-UK PM Tony Blair's mother was a Corscadden from Donegal so these will be part of his family. I believe that his children travelled using Irish rather than UK passports, probably for security reasons.
