I am researching the lineage of Malcolm McRae, who died in the Belfast Riot at Prince Edward Island on March 1, 1847. I believe he was born 1801-1803, the son of crofters John McRae and Keat McGullin, who were living at Cuaig, Applecross at the time. Malcolm was married to Margaret McLennan 04 March 1830, he lived at Radcal and she at Balgie. Malcolm also had brothers Alexander, born 1788, who married Ann McDonald at Urray in 1816, and Norman, born 1804, Applecross.
I believe Malcolm McRae and his wife, Margaret McLennan emigrated to Prince Edward Island around 1837. I can't find any info on John McRae and Keat McGullin. Any ideas or advice? This family is elusive, or maybe the records just aren't there!

Hi....on familysearch.org.uk I put in
Mcgullin Ireland and 3 results showed up
John McGullin aged 42 was born in 1839 in Ireland and is living with his wife in LOT 31 Queens Prince Edward Island............so presumably they came over to Canada as well and followed Keat Mcgullin
it might be worth doing the same search for McCrae..............allan

Keat McGullin was living in Cuaig, Applecross, Scotland in the early 1800's, so I don't see the connection between her and John McGullin, who was born in Ireland in the 1840s ..... My MacRaes lived at Lot 60 on Prince Edward Island so I don't see any connection. Thanks very much for checking, though - I appreciate the assistance!

the extracted IGI batch C110582 for Applecross has this baptism
Malm. McRae bp 26/9/1801 son of John McRae & Keat McGillise
In the same batch also 2 siblings
Normand bp 7/5/1804
Christy bp 5/11/1809
The extracted records start only in 1797 for Applecross, likewise the opr on Scotland's People.
It might be worth asking on the Scotland board to see if there are any options when parish records don't survive.

Thanks, Osprey, for the info - I didn't know about Christy! I have a copy of Malcolm's christening record, and Keat's last name is definitely spelled "McGullin". :)
What *Scotland* board do you refer to? I would love to post there, as well! I sure wish Applecross records started earlier than 1797! I can't find the marriage record between Malcolm's parents, John McRae and Keat McGullin - who knows, maybe they were just handfasted!

there's the general Scotland board which gets a lot more traffic
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,84.0.html
and the one for Ross & Cromarty

As you gave an approx date for Malcom's birth, I thought you didn't have the baptism. I gave the name how it was transcribed on the IGI record. I should know better considering the IGI transcription of my gggrandmother's baptism says male, when the original says child.
There are many records that don't survive, it doesn't mean the marriage didn't take place, though. There may be other ways of checking.

Thanks, Osprey, for the links; I will definitely check them out. I originally thought that Malcolm was born in 1803 because of info compiled by descendants and posted on another web site, but I don't think two years is too much of a discrepancy, do you?
The transcriber must have gotten sidetracked when writing out your gggrandmother's info!

I am looking for info on Malcolm MacRae and Margaret McLennon. After Malcolm was murdered Margaret and some of her children came to Lambton Co. Ontario to live, as did some of Alexander McRae and Ann's children. Malcom would be my gg grandfather. Willing to share info.

Well, I guess I am the world's expert on the Belfast Riot, and have some info on Malcolm MacRae (born 1803) that I wd be happy to share with you. Callum Beck, PEI.

I would love to talk with a descendant of Malcolm MacRae for work on my book on the Belfast Riot. Is there anyway we could connect? I have a ton of info on him but would love to get the family traditions.
