Title: 1911 Wakefield Prison
Post by: NellieT on Monday 01 March 10 16:41 GMT (UK)
Hi, I found a relative in Wakefield Prison in the 1911 census. Are there any prison records online or does anyone do any prison record look-ups? I cannot get to the Wakefield archives as I live too far away. NellieT

Thanks very much for that information it has helped greatly. Unfortunately the records have shown that I have numerous criminals in my family tree - mainly for debt! Not sure that it works locking people up when they are in debt unless they did paid work inside.
I can see me wasting a few hours looking at these records over the next few days. Thanks again, Nellie

Hi Nellie

Glad to have helped.

Don't worry, I have found the same thing in my family - numerous criminals - involving debt, sheep stealing and neglecting family !

I suppose it just shows what a struggle life was for people back then.  Nowadays they would get financial help and not have to resort to crime.

Regards,

Ermin

I once helped a lady in Sydney whose ancestor was deported(for 7 years, but he never returned to the UK) in the early 1800's from Norfolk, for stealing turnips !!! It was his 2nd offence, but I bet all he wanted to do was feed his family.

Seems such a petty crime nowadays doesn't it?
