I have a Mary Minister in my tree, her mother was Susanna.
I've found the following information on the Bishop's Transcripts and I'm struggling to understand what was going on - maybe someone with more experience can help?
All from Parish of Freethorpe records:
Baptisms, 1758-1815 image 8 shows Mary's baptism in 1769. Baseborn child of Susanna Minister, (I think Spinster) of the parish of Mautby.
Banns & Marriages 1755 - 56
Image 5, shows the banns for a marriage of Edward Kipling (?) parish of Mautby, to Susanna Minister otp in April to May 1769.
The next image shows a marriage for John Fearman & Susanna Minister on 28/4/1773
all well and good, but it gets complicated two ways,
Firstly, John & Susanna Fearman then go on to have another daugther baptised, also called Mary, in 1782
And the Mary I have in my tree married a William Newson, also in Freethorpe, (image 8) in 1791 - witnesses John Minister and Susanna Fearman.
I've also checked the Mautby Parish - there's no sign of a marriage for Susanna Minister to Edward Kipling, in fact there were very few marriages happening there at all.
Does anyone have any idea what's going on?
Is Susanna the mother of Mary number one, and if so how likely would it be, when Mary number one was still alive & kicking, that she'd have another daughter called Mary?
Were there two Susanna Ministers? Or one Susannah with a very complicated life? And were the names of Mary's witnesses somehow written down incorrectly - though this seems unlikely :o
any thoughts very welcome ;)

Hi Dem -do you know for sure that the first Mary survived? is hte mary 'inyour tree' a Minster or a Fearman (she could have taledn name anyway)
also the witnesses - nothing to stop susanna having a brother john
susanna possibly only 'engaged' to edward - maybe the marriage didn't happen because of Marys birth??
think you will need to look for a death of mary minster between 1769-1782.

Hi Diddy,
Thanks for your reply.
Yes, I'd agree that the marriage to Edward probably didn't take place, problem is, that leaves me with only one possible Susanna who could be Mary's mother.
I'm pretty sure that it was Mary number one who married William. They married in 1791. If the other Mary was baptised shortly after she was born, she'd only have been 9 at the time of the marriage. Even the older Mary would only have been 22 at the time.
If there was only one Susanna Minister (not a common name, U'd guess), then she must have either have had two daughters called Mary, or Mary number one was baptised twice, but I didn't think that was possible.
The marriage witnesses could be red herrings I suppose, susanna Fearman could well be Mary's mother, and maybe John Minister was anuncle or some other relative.
But the part about the two Mary's has me baffled

Hi Diddy,
I've just taken another look at the baptism for Mary 2 - at a closer look, the name Mary has been crossed through, and Sarah is written above. Ine then next page, the bill exchanges for baptism of Sarah is shown.
I feel a bit dim :-[

Hello Dem,
I, also, have Susannah in my husband's tree and have been puzzled over the lds entry for her daughter Mary (i.e. surname Minister and not Fearman). Have we been in touch on GR? (I am Jan).
From the Bishops Transcript it does all seem to make sense - that was my next 'port of call' so you have saved me some time.
Kind regards, Jan

Hi Jan,
Thanks for your post. I've tried to reply by PM, but as you've only made one post on the boards I can't contact you that way. Could you make another two posts please? I'll be able to send a message to you then.
Cheers

Hello Dem,
Thank you for your message - I don't really understand this site as yet and keep losing my way!

Hi Dem,
My husband has Maria Isabella Newson in his tree on his mother's side. Does your line go down through her too?
Kind regards,
Jan
