Could someone please look up the death/burial details of the first wife of Aaron SIMMONS.
She was Ellen COBHAM and they married in 1873.
The birth of their children, consistently record her as Ellen COBHAM.
His second marriage (in 1914) records that his wife died in 1896.
I have not been able to find her death or birth details.
Could someone please help me.

Hi Dee,
Well done.
I note your interests in the BURTON family. This will be a long shot, but do you know anything about Ann Jane BURTON (She was the second wife of Aaron SIMMONS and she is my real interest.
Details compiled from her marriage certificate and her death certificate, construct her as;
Ann Jane BURTON, daughter of William John BURTON & Margaret HALL. Born about 1856 in Carrick, Tasmania.
Marriage certificate (28 Nov 1882) states;
born Carrick, Tasmania, aged 26, parents William John BURTON & Margaret BURTON (nee HALL)
The name HALL was used for one of her children - Maude Elizabeth Hall BOWMAN.
Death certificate (20th Oct 1944) states;
born Carrick, Tasmania, 86 years in Victoria, 2 years in Tasmania
I have searched everywhere (that I can think of) and spent an exhausting amount of time researching her and I have struck a total deadend with the above information.
I can find nothing on her parents.
Any help would be extremely welcomed.
Regards
Grantley

Sorry Grantley.....as far as I know, my Burtons all remained in Norfolk, although I suspect one went to the USA.
I can't see a Wiiliam John Burton's death in Victoria, and I have no access to any Tasmanian information that is not online....... :-\
Glad to have helped with Ellen/Helen's death though...... :D

Wow,
I was looking under the wrong stones. No wonder I couldn't find anything. I was looking in England, Scotland & Victoria. And I would never have considered looking in my home state of South Australia.
You have left me speachless and happy.
A huge thankyou, Dee.

The clue for South Australia came from the Victorian death entries, Grantley. Some of them had born in SA. :D
Might be worth looking up BISA to see if there is any info in there.....do you have ready access?
Dee
-
Yes & No.
There is a copy of the BISA at my local library, which opens tomorrow afternoon.
I have full access to the South Australian BD&M records via the library. The only restriction is access to the computer.
At least you have me on the right track.
Thanks again,
Grantley

Hi Jenn,
Thank you very much for the migration details.
I never expected such success when I posted my original entry.
The IGI lists;
a Colina McLeod, bapt 20 Feb 1832 at Saint Peter, Liverpool, Lancashire, England plus
an Alfred Edward COBHAM, born 3 Aug 1827, bapt 12 Aug 1830, Ware, Hertford, England.
I think I can swim from here.

Grantley,
a search for Cobham at http://ndpbeta.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/home
brings some results for the South Australian Advertiser for your Cobham family.
Dee
-
Thank you Dee,
I know that web site is there but keep forgetting to look at it.
The article dated February 14, 1859 is most probably in relation to the death of his mother, that was registered in the Jul/Sep quarter of 1858 (as per FreeBMD)
Regarding the fine for the unlicensed vehicle, in 1859. Now I have to explore that concept. What vehicles needed to be licensed in South Australia in 1859? More research needed.

Grantley, I can't wait till more years of the South Australian Advertiser become available on there. It's amazing the little snippets of information that you find that bring your family "to life". I've found a couple of treasures. Of course, it helps having an uncommon surname (like Cobham) to research. :D
If anyone's ancestors are in South Australia at that time, it's always worth having a look.
Good luck with the rest of your searching. :D

Hi
Just been reading with great interest this info about Ellen Cobham. I'm descended from her daughter Sarah Selina Simmons and have a lot of info on the family, particuarly the old Cobhams, including a photo of Nathaniel Cobham, Ellen's grandfather from Ware, Hertfordshire. I have some info on the McLeods too - they were Scottish, not English, Colina was the daughter of Donald McLeod and Jane Gordon, born in Farr, Sutherland, probably displaced to the coast during the highland clearances. Happy to share everything I've got. Drop me a line if you'd like more details.
cheers
Innes

You may already have this - or it may not be your person.
There is mention of the Will of an Aaron Simmons, Gent of St Kilda, on the Victorian site. Unfortunately the actual will is not digitised but there is a list of his assets and ebts. Wife is named as Maria.

Thankyou Judith,
So many new places to look at. Even though this is not our Aaron SIMMONS, it has exposed me to another resource to use.

I'll help you if I can, Daz, though all I can offer is possible lookups, as I'm not related to any of these names.

My research suggests that the Colina McLeod baptised at St Peter's Liverpool in 1832 was the daughter of Colin McLeod & Margaret, she was the sister of my husband's great grandfather Norman McLeod. She married (1) Duncan Robertson Blair in 1851, then (2) Alexander Sorbison in 1856 and died in Liverpool, Lancashire.
