Title: McCallum/McCollum
Post by: Knocknagow on Saturday 27 February 10 18:45 GMT (UK)
After years thinking my grandfather came from Co Antrim I discover in the 1911 Census that he in fact came from Co Derry.  His name was Patrick McCallum/McCollum (his marriage cert is McCollum but everything else is McCallum) and he was born in 1861.  His father's name was Thomas McCallum/McCollum.  There are 2 Thomas McCollums in Griffiths Valuation and both lived in Kilrea.  My grandfather was Catholic so does anyone know the name of the Catholic Church in Kilrea - I would be grateful for any help.

Here's a link to Thomas in 1911 census with birthplace showing as Co.Derry-

And here's your previous thread which mentions his marriage certificate lists father as Thomas McCollum, farmer-

Checking the pages from Griffith's Valuation one entry is in the townland of Claragh (just outside Kilrea) which consists of land only (4 acres 2 rods 0 perches) which he's sharing with 2 other men. The other entry is for house, office, yard & garden (total 15 perches) on Bridge St. in Kilrea. Both properties come under the Mercer's Company.

Here's a link to Wikipedia page for Kilrea which lists 2 R.C. chapels in the area- St. Anne's in Kilrea and St. Mary's further out on present Drumagarner Rd. Not sure how far back St. Anne's goes but PRONI have microfilmed copies of Baptisms, Marriages and Deaths 23 Aug.1846-26 Dec.1860 on one reel and Baptisms Jan.1861-Aug.1865, Marriages and Deaths 1861-Mar.1877 on another reel. Coleraine Library also have copies of these 2 reels.

Added- there are no McCollum/McCallum headstones at Drumagarner (although there is McCallion).

Hi Aghadowey thank you for your reply and sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you.  I am going to PRONI next Tuesday and I will check out St Anne's.  My grandfather was born in 1861 and he was a teacher so I might be able to track him through that.  It is frustrating when all I know of him that he was born in Co Derry and his father's name was Thomas but I do appreciate your imput.

Thanks again.

Jane

I forgot to mention Aghadowey the Thomas McCallum in the 1911 Census was my uncle.  I found out my grandfather was born in Co Derry from the 1911 Census.
