What era are we talking about when Shaws kept it John?
Not sure where Bedworth Hill is/was, I cannot find it on the OS map. I only know of two pubs on the canal in Bedworth, there was the Old Bush in Coalpit Fields Road nearby which had a thatched roof and was burnt down, and the other is the Navigation in Bulkington Road which I believe is still open.

Know where you mean now John, I used to run Xcountry round there when I was at Nicholas Chamberlaine School fifty years ago but cannot remember seeing a pub there. I know a man/men who will though and will make a phone call later.
Superb photo of the Old Bush in Bedworth As It Was which was published by the Bedworth Echo some twenty odd years ago, also one looking down from Bedworth Banks at row of old cottages in Coal Pit Fields Road and writing mentions Hextall, Bailey and Tallis families and Mrs Hammersley's shop

Have just phoned the man who I mentioned who was brought up in that area and he confirmed that it was the New Inn and was just as you say John. Arthur Shaw died only recently he said and he was in his nineties and lived in Bulkington.
The one thing I forgot to ask was if he had any photos but if you want to ring 024 76 353534 which is the Nuneaton News and ask for Mort Birch I know he would love a chat and would probably have a photo. He is your man for all things Bedworth!

Did you know that a Shaw family were associated with the Nuneaton Silk trades during the early and mid 1800's.
I wonder if they are the same family?
-
There are quite a lot of Shaws still living in the Bedworth and Nuneaton area, one family are opposite me in the latter. I will have a chat and find out their origins.
Will also have a look in the 1841 to see how many were around in that year.
-
thanks John!
Most of my Shaw's lived in Bulkington and Bedworth and worked at one of the brickworks.
-
Do you happen to know the name of Arthurs wife? I spoke to my Gran today, and her father (my great granddad) was Arthurs cousin.

Hi John,
I can remember the pub, my Granddad used to live in thehouse on the arm, his name was Caleb Carvell.
We used to park our Morris 10 near the pub and walk along to his house I,m 68 so obviously I was too young to have been in, but I would think that Caleb and his family would have used it .
Did you get any photos of the area ?
-
hi rizariza
:) only photos i found are in the library in the echo i know the name carvell
i lived up the road at 47 coalpitt fields but that has gone now my wife's family used to live in one of the houses by the pub his name was George priddy he worked on the boats

My Family originated around Bedworth (beduth)My Great grandfather was a deputy at Newdigate Pit his father apparently went AWL during first world war and they changed their Name from Barlow to Barton so family tree very hard to trace especially since we live in New Zealand lots of people seam to trace back to Barlows barge company my Grandad was a very big man and went under the name of Jack Barton guess he could have been related to Jack Barlow.
When we lived in Bedworth visited several pubs mentioned plenty of choices used to be about a pub on every street corner.

I dropped onto this site by chance and decided to sign up as I have some info to add that 'May' be of help. Al in Vane. When I was at 'Nicho' in the 1960s, the cross country route was across the school fields and along the canal to the Marston Lane bridge, over the bridge, then out across the fields and back toward the canal, coming back onto Bulkington Lane (Or Bulkington Road as it is now called) at the Navigation bridge. Some of the lads would take a shortcut along the canal towpath straight to the 'Navi'. The only pub along that stretch was the Navigation. The route may have changed after I left 'Nicho'. The New Inn was Bedworth Hill which was the next canal bridge toward Coventry. The pub was demolished in about 1960. Arthur Shaw, his wife Ida and daughter Jennifer moved to The Three Horeshoes pub in Heath Road Nuneaton, and Arthur later took over as Landlord at the Weaver Arm in Ryton, Bulkington. There is a booklet in the Bedworth Library 'My Bedworth Memories at Speedwell Farm & Downing Crescent' written by Vilma Chrichlow, compiled by Tony Davis, that mentions Arthur Shaw and many other past characters from Bedworth Hill.
