Hi everyone, I am searching for any information on the above. His Army number is 155866. I believe he was a range finder in The Royal Garrison Artillery and served in Mesopotamia. I think he was discharged in 1917. Sometimes known as Jack Shotton on his papers. He may have been born in the district of Shifnal in Shropshire I am trying to find out the exact date. My thanks in advance for any help.

It is indeed, thank you very much. Actually on that census he is a 12 year old boy. I am now going to start reading the "How to" pages to try and link him to the other surnames I have been given.
My thanks again.

Hi,
Just checked to see if his service record has survived but can only see his Medal Card. Maybe you have this already.
There is a service record for John Shotton born 1892 who lived at 74 High Street, Shifnal (service number 170948). May be related to Benjamin John Shotton ???.

Hi Luzzu,
Probably is a relation, I shall have to check that with the family.
Please can you tell me how to find his medal card on-line, I am fascinated by how fast you all can do these things. It has taken me months to get where I am now. Thank you for your help.

Hi Wendy,
That is very kind thank you, need all the help I can get as a newbie. There is one condition, please can you explain how you connect the names, I would like to learn and may be help someone else some time in the future.
The names I have so far; Shoebotham and Marson only info for these to connect them is some old photos of them at different farms in Cheadle, N. Staffs. "Callow Hill Farm", "Mow Cop Farm", and "Crowborough Farm". We can not identify who is who because the writing on the photos only gives either a surname or a farm not both. Really frustrating. There is also the name Cooke of Whoore staffs.
Some members of the Shotton family have Marson as a middle name so we know there is definatley a link there.
Is it best for me to subscribe to see more records, or just pay as I go?
Thanks all once again
Rich
Edit: Should I post these names in the Staffordshire section of the site, or is that double posting?

Once again my thanks, this is definitely the family and solves a big part of the jigsaw.
One more question is this where you get the info. from http://www.ukcensusonline.com/
Edit,
gortonboy. I have just seen your new posts, this is amazing
I would like to thank everyone in this thread who is helping me, you are unlocking secrets and long forgotten memories that we all thought had been lost forever. I can not describe how emotional this is for all of us

hi is the gladys m shoebotham one of "yours" ?

I am hoping she is. We are having a family meeting tomorrow, and hoping someone can place her. It is just too good a connection to let her slip through the net
Rich

HI
According to Census I will be make a stab in the dark and say that the Cheadle that Frederick and Gladys married at was the one in Staffs.
In the very lastest census newly available to us she is living at Reckley Farm Checkley Tean Stoke on Trent Staffordshire
Her father is Daniel Shoebotham bn circa 1858 Dilhorne Staffs

HI
In the early census and records the surname Shoebotham appears to have started off as Shufflebotham
Daniel who I mentioned above his parents were Loton/John Shufflebotham/Showbotham and Sarah.
Daniels mum Sarah and siblings are living at Callow Hill Magedale, Dilhorne, Cheadle in the 1891 census.
Wendy

Hi
The same Daniel Shoebotham/Shufflebotham married one Emma Marson in Dec 1881
Now I can't take credit for most of this latest info including the name change but if you visit the website lind in my message you can see all what I saw more

Hello winston
Thank you for your help. You can take the credit for finding that website, excellent piece of work. How on Earth did you do it, please tell.
I did not know about the Shufflebotham/Showbotham connection either.
A new twist tonight, at some time the name of Marson was at risk of dying out, no male heir I suppose. So it was double barrelled to "Marson-Shotton" to keep it alive.
Thank you to Luzzu also for the Service and medal record information
Forever in your debt

State of play,
Today I bought myself the "Dummies, Researching your family history online" and "Family history on the net" by Colin Waters, Countryside books. (Other genealogy books are available). I have also started putting all the names in some sort of order on a very rough family tree, to enable us to physically see who everyone is related to. As for being addicted? Not really, I only think about all this while I am awake.

Hi Ricky
the marriage below that Gortonboy found first is the link you were after to some extent.
possible shoebotham / marson link
Marriages Mar 1881
Marson John Cheadle 6b 345
SHOEBOTHAM Eliza Cheadle 6b 345
SHOEBOTHAM Martha Cheadle 6b 345
SILLITO George Cheadle 6b 345
Since I sent you the Pm earlier today stating that I have found Benjamin J Shotton's marriage mistranscribed as Sholton to one Edna Mary Marson I have taken a look at the image and it does say SHOLTON so somewhere along the way somone misheard heard him.
I have found Ben's wife in the census prior to marriage and her parents turn out to be John and Eliza from the marriage above.

HI Ricky
I'm on a roll now,
Remember the website I posted abt refering to the Shoebotham/Shufflebottom well Eliza Shoebotham is in fact the daughter of John/Loton Shoebotham and Sarah.
Wendy
-
Hi Wendy,
Thanks, that confirms what I thought. I am slowly getting the hang of piecing together the info. on that site.
One of Benjamin John's war stories passed down by word of mouth with absolutely no embellishment what so ever ::) He and his comrades were tasked to move the heavy artillery forward during the night ready for the next days fighting. It happened to be the eve of a religious festival for the enemy fighters. At dawn 4000 of the enemy surrendered without a shot being fired, they thought the noise during the night was a sign of anger from the heavens, at them fighting on a Holy day.

Hi
I dont know if you can help but I am compiling a book on the history of Dilhorne and am currently researching Callow Hill Farm and the Shoebothams to include them in the book, do you have any photos of the farm or the Shoebothams or any family history that you would be willing to share to include in the book? or perhaps any other family members do?
Look forward to hear from you
Regards

Hello Irene,
I only have a little info from the Shotton/Marson side of the family. I will ask if there are any Dillhorne photos, this will take a day or two, you know what farmers are like!
I should really give you all a little update.
Thanks entirely to the help from the chatters here, I did contact a family who live at Mow Top farm, they were a little shocked when I phoned them up, but very nice and polite. Unfortunately they did not know any thing about the previous occupants.
The uncanny thing is they are agricultural contractors, which is exactly the same as the farmer on whose behalf I am searching. Gave him quite a turn when I told him, so I have been waiting for him to show some interest before proceeding any further. I should think he has recovered by now, so will ask about the photos.
-
Hi Richy
did you have any joy with any material re Dilhorne?
Best wishes
Irene

I phoned the farmer the day you originally posted, he is going to find the photos for me, he has been really busy. I will visit him tomorrow and report back.
