Hello all :)
My great-great-grandmother was Mary Farrell. She was born in Jun of 1862 in Pennsylvania. She married Thomas Timlin in 1883 in Philadelphia and together they had 9 kids.
I'm trying to find more on Mary Farrell. I've looked a little but can't always find stuff. You guys know exactly where to look sometimes :P
Farrell may not be the exact spelling. A fuzzy sound search would probably be best. Hopefully someone can find something :)
If you need the names of the kids I can provide them.
-
This one is always a good start - www.pilot.familysearch.org should give you some census info ;D
Lots of Mary Farrell in Pennsylvania on the 1880 census who are possibles so would need more info on her before her marriage in 1883.
Thomas is a widow by 1920 according to anc..try tree.
-
That's the bad thing :P I don't have much information on her before her marriage. All I have is her birth month and year.
Yes, she died around 1912. I'm not sure of an exact year though.
-
Neither the 1870 or 1880 census give month or year so thats not an option.
Could do with finding the marriage certificate which should give her parents names (hopefully) - anything in RAOGK for Pennsylvania ?
-
Just recently found out some new information on the Farrell's.
Mary had a brother named Lawrence who was a priest. I have a tiny bit more information about Lawrence on my computer upstairs so I will add an edit after.
EDIT: He was a Holy Ghost Father and worked down South.
-
According to the 1900 census, her parents were born in Ireland.
Listing her children from the 1900 census, in case she followed a naming pattern: Kate, Cecelia, William, Lawrence, Annie, Thomas, Bernard.
1910 census includes children:
Helen and Andrew.
Aunt, Mary Clarke?, age 65, born Ireland, widowed, living with the family.
-
Hello Bullfrog.
I have tried to match a Mary 1862 with a brother Lawrence on the 1880 census and come up with this option :-
1880 Census Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Unfortunately I cannot find this family on any other census before 1880 ???
Patrick Farrell 50 Born Ireland Labourer
Ellen Farrell 50 Born Ireland
John M. Farrell 21 Painter
Mary C. Farrell 18 (Could the "C" stand for Cecilia ?)Works In Cotton Mill
Annie Farrell 15 Works In Cotton Mill
William J. Farrell 14 Works In Cotton Mill
Larance A. Farrell 11 Works in Cotton Mill
Joseph P. Farrell 8
I wonder if this is more than a possibility because the age of this Lawrence would fit the above.
1930 Census Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Broad Street
Lawrence Farrell 61 Clergyman Owns home $15,000
Eugene Fisher 35 Lodger
James Clark 36 Lodger
Thomas Naughton 54 Lodger

Hello Bullfrog.
Standby to be amazed.
US Passport Appication:- 28 April 1924
I Lawrence E Farrell being a Native and Loyal Citizen of the United States apply for a passport to go to Ireland. I was born in Philadelphia on 31 August 1868 and my father was Patrick Farrell who was born in Ireland and is now dead. That he emigrated from a Port in Ireland on or about 1848. Resided in the USA for 46 years from 1848 - 1894 and that he was a naturalized citizen on or before 1868 in Philadelphia. My permanent residence is 714 North Broad Street. Pennsylvania where I follow the occupation of Clergyman. never had passport before. I am about to go abroad temporarily for a period of 4 months - Ireland - Vacation. I intend to leave Philadelphia on board the Haverford on May 31st 1924.
Contains a photograph.
New York Passenger List - 22 Sept 1924.
Lawrence Farrell born 31 August 1868 travelling from Liverpool to New York (Home:- 714 North Broad Street. Philadelphia. PA on the SS Adriatic
;D ;D
-
So from the above information it may be that Patrick Farrell travelled to the USA as a single person if the 1848 date is correct. (He would only be 18 years old) The death date for father Patrick looks like 1894 which I have found.
27 Oct 1894 Burial 31 Oct 1894. Parents were Patrick Farrell and Ellen Farrell (same names again) Buried Old cathedral Cemetery. His address at the time:- 2507 Federal Ward 36. The date of birth however would be out - 1839 and age 55 years
http://www.rootschat.com/links/089n/
www.castlegarden.org do show a couple of Patrick Farrell in 1848 but not the correct age but I suppose we have to take the 1848 date as a rough guide and not an exact one.
Could'nt find Lawrence on the Haverford but found this one:-
UK Incoming Passenger List.
Laurence Farrell. Born 1869. New York to Liverpool. Ports of voyage - Cobh, Queenstown. On the SS Celtic. (White Star Line) Proposed Address :- St Mary's College. Rathmines. Dublin. Clergyman.

Blimey! :o :o :o ;D ;D ;D :) :) :) ;D ;D ;D
So much information to process! :P
I wonder why you can't find a census with them on it before 1880.
Wow! I think you definitly have the right family. Lawrence was priest and part of the Congregation of the Holy Ghost Noviate.
Standby to be amazed.
I AM AMAZED! So much information and this helps so much! Wait a minute! When you say there is a photograph, do you mean a photograph of Lawrence?! If there is an image of him could you please send it to me?
My grandfather remember's seeing a picture of him in his house when he was little & while he was growing up. I was over their house yesterday night and he was saying that he can see this picture in a mental image. I wonder if that is Lawrence and if I show him, because he may be able to tell me if it's him or not!!! This is fantastic!!!
Even though it says his parents were listed as Patrick and Ellen and that he was a couple years off, do you still think that this is the death and burial for the Patrick who was father of Lawrence & Mary?
Thank you for that other death record. I always find it heartbreaking to find a child who died young :(
-
I'd also like to thank you ever so much! Without your help there would be that other big gap in my tree :( You really took the time to look for everything there may be. :)
This really is a big help and I hope you know that you've really helped me.
Isn't it strange that we really had no progress & had hit a dead end, but just from the information of one brother, it can change everything! It's amazing!
I hope that you may be able to find some more things, or even able to send me that picture, but if you can't, thats still okay :)
-
Found this and can't find what date it is referring to:- ??? ??? Think it is 25 years before 1959 would be = 1934 ??? ???

Please send me a pm with your e-mail address to send passport application. ;D ;D

It would seem there is another Patrick and Ellen in Philadelphia who also have a son Lawrence born in 10 Sept 1873 Died 19 April 1910 but that family seem to have gone AWOL as well. ???
I think you have to believe most of the detail in the passport appication because that was given by Lawrence - pity he did'nt tell us about Mum as well !!
Another for the filing cabinet - the age is slightly out again - A death for Ellen Farrell 29 Dec 1897. Buried at Holy Cross. Age 61 years. Widowed. Housekeeper.

What did grand-father say about the photograph of Lawrence - was it the image he had in his head ?
I have all the members of this family coming up individually on the 1870 Census but they don't show on Image 76. Page 21. where they are suppose to. Have gone to the pages either side but still no luck - the whole census for this district is 124 pages. Have asked for help on this thread:-
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=445777.new#new
EDIT:- Have also gone through all 124 pages - no sign.
Reported as an image missing for all family members.
-
I did not show him the image yet. My printer is broken, I'll most likely go to my library sometime this week and print it and go over and show it to him.
Hmm, that is strange. Thank you for looking & posting a new thread based on that image. That must be intensly frusturating!
-
Investigating the possibilities for trying to get further information on Father Lawrence Farrell since the date of death looks like 14 March 1934.
RAOGK - 2nd on the list for Philadelphia may be worth an e-mail !! Nothing ventured - nothing gained.
http://www.raogk.org/pennsylv5.htm
The Philadelphia Inquirer only goes up to 1922 as do most obit look up volunteers. Someone gave me this today but not sure any of it will help in this case, may be useful for you finding other bits on Philadelphia relatives if needed - This web page has a good summary of what's available online for PA newspaper archives
http://trilogy.brynmawr.edu/guides/Philadelphia_Regional_News/
Looks like a brick-wall for the moment.
-
Have contacted a gentleman who is excellent with his Pennsylvania genealogy skills, to see if he can suggest perhaps a Church contact so that we can find out where Father Lawrence Farrell may be buried. Hopefully have a response from him in a few days if this is the area of Pennsylvania that he has knowledge of. Fingers crossed. ;)
-
That's great! I can't wait for the response!
I contacted someone in RAOGK who said they could do Obits. Hopefully they can find one :)
-
Hey Bullfrog.
Goodnews on the Obits. Johnnyboy is terrific and he will point you in a much better direction than I ever could - keep us posted though, it is always interesting to find out how things turn out. Good Luck ;D
-
Hi bullfrog: Dettori28 is very kind to call me a gentlemen. ;) She sent me a message that you might need help with getting information on Father Lawrence Farrell, a relative who was a priest in Philadelphia.
I know much more about the western part of Pennsylvania, but I had a look around on the Internet for you.
The easiest thing for you to do would be to contact the Archdiocese of Philadelphia: Here's an e-mail address: webmaster@adphila.org. It's a general e-mail address, rather an address to a particular department, so whoever reads it will probably have to forward your e-mail to another person. But it seems to be the best there is in the way of contact information.
I suggest that you include as much information in your e-mail about Father Lawrence as you can: when he was born, where he served as a priest (Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament closed in 1972, according to the Archdiocese website), when he died. And tell them what it is you want to know.
If I think of anything more, I'll post it.
Good luck.
Regards,
John :o :o :o
-
Thank you very much John. I will definitely contact them and I will keep you guys posted! Thank you all so much! I couldn't have gotten where I was without your help.
-
Excuse me for jumping in here, but I found the following which MAY be of interest.
1870 US Census
Philadelphia Ward 26, District 86
FARREL
Patrick, 55, labourer, b Ireland
(H)ellen, 42, b Ireland
William, 22, b PA
John, 11, b PA
Mary, 9, b PA
William, 4, b PA
Laura?, 2, b PA...wondered if this might be Lawrence
BUT, where is Annie
There is another FARREL family living immediately next door also from Ireland.
Willliam 45, Mary 40, James 13, Rose 11, Ann 9, Wm 4, John 6 mos.
The children were all born in PA
Long shot I know, considering the ages :D
Grub
-
Thank you Grub. Thought I was going cuckoo again when I could'nt find it but I see the record you mean now. This version has the spelling Patrick Farell born 1815 in Jordan - how strange. The one I was looking for yesterday said Philadelphia Ward 26 Dist 86 (2nd Enum), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Does anyone know if there were 2 seperate census done in 1870, I am trying to understand 2 Enum ?
The passport application with the details of the son Lawrence gave Patrick's Death as 1894.
When we look at that, his birth was given as 1839 and his parents were listed as Patrick and Ellen, so on this 1870 census Grub has found for us - is this the next generation back !!! ?? Patrick could be but Hellen to young. If it is our Patrick the birth date has now varied 1815 - 1839 !!
The children look exactly right - apart from Annie. Really need more pieces to the jig-saw !!
This is very weird !!!
Philadelphia Ward 26 District 86,
Birthplace Jordan
Patrick Farell 55
Hellen Farell 42
Willn Farell 22 John Farell 11 Mary Farell 9 Willn Farell 4 Laura Farell 2
I have found the William and Mary who live next door and traced them back to 1860 on the off chance that Patrick was next door but no such luck. ???
-
Had to go away and have a think about that 1870 Census but that isn't the same record as the ones I can see individually - the penny has just dropped that the names are written differently and the age of Patrick is way out anyway.
The District is the same but the spelling of the names, ages etc are different. Each family member is the only one listed on each record.
I wonder if there were 2 census taken or if the 2 Enum is the second half of the same district.
Also a few posts ago in reply 16 - I found the death record of a Lawrence Farrell son of Patrick and Ellen Farrell which shows us there were 2 families of similar name.
The daft thought going through my head - is that the second one could be Patricks father but with a second wife - age gap in the children on that record ? At 55 years old - if yours was born 1839 - it would be possible !! Another brain-teaser !!
Philadelphia Ward 26 Dist 86 (2nd Enum), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Patrick Farrell 40
Ellen Farrell 40
John Farrell 12
Mary Farrell 9
Ann Farrell 5
William Farrell 4
Lawrence Farrell 2

Trying to answer my own questions:-
It would seem that in 1870 there were two census enumerations taken in Philadelphia. The index to the first enumeration is Philadelphia, PA 1870 Census Index. 929.3748 P53p. Look at the addenda in the front of this index for Wards 27 and 28. There is no index to the second enumeration. There are, however, descriptions on microfilm of many of the second enumeration boundaries. These boundaries are also shown graphically in a series of drawings at the Map Department.
Apparently the 1870 census was filmed twice. The second filming (2nd) is listed first and is usually easier to read. However, since some of the records were faded
or lost between the first and second filmings, it is better to search the first filming
(1st) whenever the material on the second filming (2nd) is too light to
read. ::) ???
http://www.rootschat.com/links/089z/
-
Sorry I never responded, for some reason my e-mail stop sending notifications.
That does seem like such a brain teaser. I wonder if those could be his parents with him.
-
Some of those 1870 Philadelphia census are very difficult to read, some not at all. Seems strange the names are more or less exactly the same, think it must be the same family just transcribed differently on the second enumeration. ???
-
I contacted them and they sent me an e-mail to another place. So I e-mailed the other place and I got some great stuff.
A photo of Lawrence from 1914
An obituary
A funeral mass newspaper clipping
A short biography
They also suggested I contact the Province of the Congregation of the Holy Ghost by phone. So I called and I talked to a woman who said she would look and see if she could find anything!
-
Wow. That is fantastic. Did it give you any other information about his family background ?
Anymore clues ?
-
Not really any new information on his family background. I just learned a litte about his life, like that when he was younger he worked at a large department store in Philadelphia. Not much though, but it's great stuff to have! Hopefully The Province of the Congregation of the Holy Ghost Archives has some information.
-
Was that date of death 8 March 1934 correct ?
-
Found this and can't find what date it is referring to:- ??? ??? Think it is 25 years before 1959 would be = 1934 ??? ???
Twenty-Five Years Ago
Lawrence E. Farrell, pastor emer- itus of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church in Philadel- phia, died March 14
I don't remember there being a March 8th but I remember you saying the 14th. May 14, 1934 was the correct date.
-
Yes. thats correct. I checked back on reply 14 and 20. Was just asking if they confirmed the date ???
-
Yup, they confirmed it.
-
Just received this link from someone re Catholic Priests. It may be worth a look but I think you probably have what you want now.
Sounds like a pay site in some respects but I have'nt had chance to look at it yet.
For help with your Catholic Priest, try this link:
http://www.pahrc.net/
There is a fee for family research, but there is also a good deal of general information available on the site.
-
My great-great-grandmother was Mary Farrell. She was born in Jun of 1862 in Pennsylvania. She married Thomas Timlin in 1883 in Philadelphia and together they had 9 kids. ... If you need the names of the kids I can provide them.
Do you have the marriage record? I have access to the marriage registers, so let me know if you'd like a look up. Depending upon the details provided in the marriage register, I may be able to find a record of birth for her as well. However, that can be trickier, as I suspect there will be many Farrells with a variety of spellings. Do you have Mary's death certificate? I can provide parents' names, date of birth, place of birth; the amount of detail varies by time frame and state. Philadelphia is an amazing city to research, one that many dread because it does have its challenges, but once you've gone cross-eyed reading films for hours, days at a time, it becomes a lot easier :)
-
PAHRC is a fee site if you want family research performed. However, there is quite a bit of information on the site, and there are links throughout it leading to additional free information. It's a valuable resource--without paying a dime :) -- when researching the Catholic church or members of it in Philadelphia and parts of the surrounding counties.

Hello Again LaurieA,
Many thanks again , as you can see I passed the informaion you gave. This is a youngster of 14 years old doing his family history. As far as I can remember Bullfrog does not have the birth or marriage certificates for Mary Farrell and Thomas Timlin. The birth of Mary Farrell we had to work from the date given on the 1900 Census which was June 1862 and in 1900 the couple had been married for 17 years which gave us a marriage date of 1883. Some anc..try trees have the date of death as 1919 for Mary Timiin and 1945 for Thomas Timlin.
When Bullfrog discovered a brother Lawrence , I was able to match Mary and Lawrence to Patrick & Ellen Farrell, however because of a problem with the 1870 census - 2 enumerations we cannot be sure the separate entries we see for each individual member of the family or the full census 2nd enumeration are one and the same family.
We were lucky to find Father Lawrence (Holy Ghost Father) and a death date of March 14th 1934. Bullfrog now has some history on him, hopefully with more to come.
If you read through the thread, from a passport application made by Father Lawrence Farrell we discovered his father Patrick died in 1894. We have matched this with an entry for death of 27 Oct 1894 and a burial 31 Oct 1894 at Old cathedral Cemetery. The date of Patricks birth would be slightly out from the information on the 1880 Census. Clarification of that would be helpful.
Any information that you could give the young man would be more than appreciated.
Regards. ;D

Sorry Again, Rootschat doesn't send me e-mails anymore...
PAHRC is where I got most of my information from. When I e-mailed webmaster@adphila.org they said it might be better if I e-mail PAHRC because they had more information. And they did! Someone sent the files over the internet.
I do not have the marriage certificate for Mary Farrell and Thomas Timlin, but I would love it. From what I know they were married in 1883 in St Charles Borromeo Roman Catholic Church. Those family trees with any information on Mary are from me.
I talked with someone who knew a lot of information on the Farrell side, and she said that Patrick Farrell was first married to a Catherine Fitzpatrick. She said Patrick and Catherine had two children John and Mary (our mary who later married Thomas Timlin)
It would be great to have her birth certificate as well to see if this information is true. I know her name was Mary Catherine Farrell and that is how it was spelt. I think she may have been born in 1861.
Yes, I do have Mary Farrell's death certificate. I got it from familysearch.org and it lists the parents as Patrick Farrell and Catherine Fitzpatrick. The name on the certificate is Mary Timlen but strangely enough, it says she is single ???
It has to be a mistake because I also found her obituary and it said Wife of Thomas Timlin and it was the same date of death.
dettori28 has all the information right above that may be helpful in finding anything. Please if you find anything, post it here, I'd really love it and hopefull you can find something :)
Thank you all so much,
Jeremiah
-
I got it from familysearch.org and it lists the parents as Patrick Farrell and Catherine Fitzpatrick.
[/color]
Perhaps Father Lawrence never mentioned his Mother on the passport application because she had died and Ellen was his step-mother.
Could really do with one of the birth certificates of Annie, William, Lawrence or Joseph to check the parents on those if you think John and Mary were the only 2 children born to Patrick and Catherine.
1860 Census Philadelphia Ward 9, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Not a good scan to read, a little "spikey" The age is written as if its a 3 reversed with a 5
Pat Farrell 25 Ireland. The age is written as if its a 3 reversed with a 5
Cath Farrell 25 Ireland. Same with the age here
John Farrell 1 Pennsylvania
William Lotherlan 50 George Lotherlan 21 These 2 are from Ireland.
-
Fr. Lawrence was the son of Patrick and Ellen. Catherine Fitzpatrick died in October of 1861. That is why I believe that Mary Farrell was born in 1861 rather than 1862 as the census stated.
John and Catherine were the children of Patrick and Catherine.
Lawrence and the others were children of Patrick and Ellen. It would be great if LaurieA could find those too!
-
How do you know Catherine Fitzpatrick died in 1861 - when did you find all this extra information ?
-
I got this information from a death certificate on familysearch.org
I recently obtained this new information from a person who has researched the Farrell's in Philadelphia.
-
Mary C. Timlin was buried 18 Aug 1913 in Holy Cross Cemetery in a plot owned by Thomas Timlin. I took a photo of the grave site so you can see the burial place. The location of the grave is Section 16, Range 1, Lot 7. Buried with her were Thomas F., Cecilia, William, Helen M., William F., and Ellen Farrell. More to come later. It was nice out today, so I opted to visit the cemetery rather than spend time in a library :)
-
Goodness me what a list - that must be 4 of the children that were on the 1900/1910 census plus perhaps a brother William and Mum/Step Mum Ellen. Does it show the dates for each one LaurieA ? :(

Wow! Thank you so much! That is very helpful. I will have to show my grandfather the grave because he would probably still remember what it looked like. I will send you a PM with my e-mail address. I can’t wait to see it :)

Yes, LaurieA does the grave have the dates of everyone because I think I know who everyone is on it but still, I’m not sure ???
Thomas F = Mary’s wife
Mary C = Herself
Cecelia = Thomas & Mary’s Daughter
William = Thomas & Mary’s Son (Thomas & Mary’s Son William’s middle name was T)
Helen M = Thomas & Mary’s Daughter
William F = May be Thomas F.’s brother
Ellen Farrell = Step Mother
I can see why Ellen is buried with Mary. Ellen was basically Mary’s mother. Mary never knew her other mother so she must have been very attached to her.
This is great information and I love to see it !!! :D thank you so much LaurieA
Please let me know when you find more :)
