Title: 1891 Census Lambeth Look-up Please - COMPLETED WITH THANKS.
Post by: Rose Y on Thursday 25 February 10 16:05 GMT (UK)
Could someone please do an address look-up for me?  I am looking for a Harris family who were living at 35 Devonshire Street, Lambeth, during 1886.  I know this because there was a child, Charles W Harris, was born there at that time.  Parents were Charles and Marian.  Thank you for any help.  Rose

Hello Rose

Is it really an address lookup you want, or are you hoping to find the relevant HARRIS family in 1891 regardless of whether they were still at the same address?

Hi Anna,

Thanks.  I am hoping that the relevant Harris family may have still been living at that same address.  Regards, Rose

It looks as if Charles Harris aged 4 was with his grandparents William and Sarah A Leach and their children in 1891 at 43 Warrior Rd Lambeth

Hi Jan,

Thank you.  That (occupants at address) scuppers that lead for me.  Oh well.

Ummm your suggestion that Charles was living with grandparents, William and Sarah Leach, is interesting, as I do not have them as the grandparents. I will need to look into this further as I haven't been able to find this (harris/s) family in any census before 1901.  Maybe, for whatever reason, the family were separated.  Grandparents surnames were Harris and Hammond.

Thanks for the input and I will work on your find.

Best wishes, Rose

Please can you give the census reference at which you have found them in 1901? It will make it easier to trace them in 1891 if all the information you have is made available.

Morning Anna,

In 1901 the family are living at 41 Blenheim Street, Chelsea.  There is a mistranscription in the name which reads "Herris" there are also errors with Charles and Marian's ages.  RG13 Piece 72 Folio 137 Page 31 Schedule 260.

Others have tried to help me with this one but I have never, for certain, been able to prove the family on any census once I have crossed checked with Freebmd or sent for certificates.  However, I am almosst certain that I have found Charles with daughter Elizabeth on the 1881.  They were "visitors" to a household in Lambeth with a family called "Ebbs" (RG11 Piece 603 Folio 84 Page 16).  The family had earlier married into a "Tebbs" family so this seems to be likely but I have not been able to find wife Marian on the 1881.

Thank you for your time.

Regards, Rose

Hello Rose

I see the family you refer to in 1901.  The only three children they have with them are James, 8; William, 5; and Daisy, 3.  By 1911 the same three children are at home and Marian states that, of 6 children she has given birth to, only 3 survive.

Do you know when the other children died?  Perhaps Charles W didn't survive until 1891?

Evening Anna,

The children listed in 1901 are all accounted for. They all survived into adulthood.  Charles W survived also.  There are two more "known" older children; Elizabeth A Harriss (note spelling change) 1844 Lambeth and Harry C Harriss born Lambeth May 1881.  All children were alive in 1911.  This of course means that what the family wrote, for whatever reason, in the 1911, is not correct.  The names of any children that did not survive are not, at this time, known to me.

For the record I have the birth certifice for all of the above individuals.

Thanks for your continued help.  Rosie.

Hi Jan,

I want to follow up the lead that you found.  Would you please let me know the ages of William and Sarah Leach, where they are from and the age of their eldest child as I want to look for their marriage.  You never know, perhaps there is a related link to the Harris/s family I am researching.

Best wishes,  Rose

It would appear that the Charles living with grandparents William and Sarah LEACH is actually only 4 months old, not 4 years, so could probably be discounted. The mos is under the 4, and does state 4/12 in the index.

Thanks Ian, showed up as just 4 on FindMyPast, but looking carefully at the actual census I can see the months under the name.  Sorry Rose.

Hi Jan,

Thank you for the information.  It was a nice try anyway.   Your help is appreciated.

Hi Ian,

Thank you for spotting the 4 "months" and thanks again for taking the time to post this for me to see and discount.

Best wishes both.  Rosie
